HOD Newbie

Hello everyone!

I'm new here, having just purchased the teacher guide for RtoR. Since HOD doesn't come to a convention near me, I was hesitant to purchase the entire package without a sneak peek first (and I own quite a few of the titles already). I chose RtoR for my 13 DS because this time period is currently a gap for him and because I think the science looks terrific and love the idea of an inventors study.

When I first opened the guide last week I have to say I was a little disappointed and wondered if I had wasted my money. I didn't like the layout (at all). I'm a grid and check mark kind of girl and I could see this driving me nuts. I then tried to type it ALL, word-for-word, into HST, and that lasted for all of 5 minutes. So I prayed.

DS and I were having a great conversation today about school and his goals. I mentioned that I purchased the guide for next year and he asked to see it. I really thought he would have comments about the hands-on activities and the music study. But he loves the look of it!!! He spent quite a while reading through it and checking out the books we already have. I asked him if he thought he could use the layout as his daily schedule (I currently print a daily schedule from HST) and he enthusiastically said yes. He can't wait to dig in! He even volunteered to work this summer

Bless you HOD! This child is my reluctant student and to see him excited about anything related to education is a true joy. Thank you!

Welcome to the HOD board. I also use HST especially for my dd who does an eclectic mix of things. For my ds that does HOD though the guide is his planner. He loves checking off the boxes as he does them and he even numbers them each morning in the order he is going to do them. In the I boxes he loves that he is responsible for reading and understanding all the directions. Up to this point all I have put in Homeschool tracker is something like Rev to Rev unit 1 day 2. I also enter the math we use, Rod and Staff, and this year the Exploration Education Science because all of those sometimes get grades that I want tracker to keep track of. He never looks at the print out though except for Math because everything else is in the guide. It is more for me to have a paper copy to write on as I grade.

Garnet, welcome to the board. We have four children to go through the guides from Preparing up, so what we do is just initial beside each box when they have done it. I can imagine by the time the last one goes through it will be a little chaotic, but there is plenty of room to put a wee pencil initial or four. By the way, I think it is tremendous to hear of your son's excitement. Enjoy the journey with your son.
