I am hoping to have an idea how much I need to budget for.

I think that Carrie is just now writing the plans out for it, so it could be a little while. As in, she's writing the daily plans so it can be shipped to print.

However, when this question came up last the consensus was to budget $1,000 to $1,500 for the Geography guide. I know that's a wide range, but not all the components are known yet, so I'd say somewhere in the middle is a good place to start :D HTH a little!

She usually puts the day at a glance and the packages up first. I know she was getting that all ready to send to the website person. If you sign up for the e-mail list you will be the first to see it. Last year I'm pretty sure she even made that visible for e-mail subscribers before it could be seen by the public.

Ladies,

You are so gracious and patient in waiting for some of this to get up on the website. The hold-up in this department is me! :D I do have the content ready for our web designer, but my hubby is still adding shopsite links to put in and we are still working on the format of the landing page. So, as we enter the high school years, this makes a difference in both the website and the catalog. This means that everybody must wait upon me to proceed, and with school still going on here daily for our 4 boys, there's only so much time to get things done.

Since it may be awhile before the new web content is up, and it may be awhile until the new catalog is done, I'm going to put the package descriptions and pricing here for you and link the corresponding sneak peeks below each package to give details about what the packages entail. Hopefully, this will help many of you in your budgeting and in your decisions! :D

Economy Package with Practical Happiness: Retail: $504.41 SAVE $70.00 (through HOD) Your Price: $434.41
Economy Package with Stepping Heavenward: Retail: $508.41 SAVE $72.00 (through HOD) Your Price $436.41
The Economy Package contains the 22 required resources below. These resources correspond with the World Geography guide’s plans to help your student earn one full credit in World Geography, ½ credit in World Religion & Cultures, and one full credit in Bible. The World Geography guide also schedules additional resources daily to allow your student to earn up to 6 ½ total credits for this year of study, so be sure to add any additional packages that come after the Economy Package to customize this program to suit your student’s needs. While this guide is ideally targeted for students in grades 9-10, students in grades 11-12 may still use it by adjusting the 3R’s and science as needed. :D

Living Library with Kisses from Katie (for girls) Retail $210.53 SAVE $41.00 (with HOD) Your Price: $169.53

This 17 book/audio set is a “Living Library”, selected for its text connections to the geography plans. The books in this package are not intended to fulfill your student’s high school literature credit, as students are scheduled in the “Literature” portion of the World Geography guide to read separate higher-level literature to fulfill that need. Instead, the books in this package were chosen to make geography come alive and to help students experience various places around the globe through the pages of these books. A daily reading schedule for the books is provided in the guide. This set is highly recommended, unless you need to economize, however it is not required to earn credit in World Geography.

Spanish: $20.95

Adding Getting Started with Spanish to the Economy Package adds ½ credit in Spanish to your student’s program. This resource is scheduled daily in the World Geography guide. To earn ½ credit in Spanish, students must either use the lessons in the book along with the free pronunciation audios on the author’s website or practice pronunciation with a teacher who has had basic prior Spanish experience. No previous Spanish exposure is necessary for the student prior to beginning this program. Students who desire to study a different foreign language, or who are beyond beginning Spanish, may substitute a different language course in place of this option to fulfill the foreign language requirement.

English:

High school credit in English is earned through a combination of literature, composition, and grammar. In the World Geography guide, the daily literature portion includes a combination of BJU Fundamentals of Literature and the choice of either a Boy Set or a Girl Set of full-length novels/plays. The composition portion uses Essentials in Writing: Grade 10 twice weekly. The grammar portion uses Rod and Staff: English 7 twice weekly (alternating with composition). Together these resources add one full English credit to your 9th-10th grade student’s program. Either order a complete English package (which includes literature, composition, and grammar), or customize by ordering a smaller package or individual items.

*BJU Fundamentals of Literature: Student Text (2nd ed.)
*BJU Fundamentals of Literature: 2 Teacher’s Guides with CD (2nd ed.)
*Essentials in Writing: Grade 10 (DVD Lessons and printable Student Book)
*Optional: Pre-printed Essentials in Writing: Grade 10 Student Book
*Rod and Staff: English 7 Student Text
*Rod and Staff: English 7 Teacher’s Manual

*Boy Set:
1. Either Shane or substitute A Christmas Carol
2. Treasure Island and Ragged Dick
3. Men of Iron
4. Screwtape Letters
5. Children of the New Forest and Captains Courageous

Note: Shane is a terrific western with many good insights into manhood, however it also has quite a bit of language in it. With this in mind, we also offer the substitution of A Christmas Carol instead. Both are scheduled in the guide.

*Girl Set:
1. A Lantern in Her Hand
2. Pride and Prejudice
3. Papa’s Wife
4. The Importance of Being Earnest
5. Little Women

Note: If your student happens to have read one of the numbered selections in his/her set above, then you may choose for your student to read the matching numbered selection from the other gender’s set instead. For example, if your student has already read Pride and Prejudice, then you would instead have your child read Treasure Island and Ragged Dick instead. Both of these books would be needed to replace Pride and Prejudice (due to length).

Adding the Science Package to your Economy Package adds one full credit of science (with or without lab) to your program. The focus of this year of science is Integrated Physics & Chemistry written by John Hudson Tiner. This set is required unless you have your own science. Both Science Packages include 12 chapters of text, 12 activity books, a printed answer key, and a Teacher Resource Kit (on CD). The Science Package with lab includes a lab kit and lab manual. Labs cannot be completed without the lab kit. All Science Package items are scheduled in the World Geography guide, including the labs. For additional students add an additional lab manual. Math:

For math, customize with one of the math options below, or use your own math curriculum to add one full math credit to your student’s program. The World Geography guide recommends a choice of either Singapore Discovering Mathematics 8A/8B or Discovering Mathematics 3A/3B (which comes after 8A/8B), or VideoText Algebra, or No-Nonsense Algebra. Since the Discovering Mathematics Series is currently being rewritten, schedules for Discovering Mathematics will eventually be available from Heart of Dakota as an option with purchase of Discovering Mathematics.

*Discovering Mathematics Common Core Series 8A/8B
*Discovering Mathematics 3A/3B (which comes after 8A/8B)
*VideoText Algebra
*No-Nonsense Algebra

Carrie,

Thank you for this. What a huge help. Now, is there anyway to see the first week's lesson plans that have been talked about? :D. I have this and one other curriculum for us to decide between. I am hoping that seeing the LP will help pull my DS to HOD, not that he gets the final say so.

Thank you so much for taking time to share this, Carrie! It is really helpful for planning ahead even if we aren't ready for the new guide. I know which books to reserve for the World Geography guide; as well as budgeting for the future. :D

And I love that you are including Kisses From Katie!

Thank you so much, Carrie, for taking the time to put this together. I've been coming here daily to find out some new news of the Geography guide, so I'm thrilled to see this. We actually won't be using this until the year following next, but I'm still very interested. :D

Thanks Carrie for doing all of this when you really are short on time!! One concern/question. We started with LHFHG in K, so my ds has always been on the younger age range of the guides. You mentioned this in your Sneak Peeks post: "...youngest age range of the geography guide, and may be using it with an 8th grader,..." which applies to me. But in this post, you say the guide is "ideally targeted for students in grades 9-10." Should I be concerned? My ds will be in grade 8 for the geography guide. I know the Science may be an issue for grade 8 (due to math requirements), but we are a year behind in HOD Science.

Ladies,

I am so glad that this was helpful to you as you are planning! I sincerely appreciate your patience! :D

As to the question about reaching the MTMM guide in grade 8, I want to assure you that if you have come up through the HOD guides on the youngest age range of each guide that it will be fine to arrive at the World Geography guide on the youngest age range of that guide too. This is because one guide does truly prepare a child well for the next guide in line. :D

However, if you were new to HOD, or if your child hadn't been using HOD for several years before coming up to do the World Geography guide, then our recommendations would definitely differ. In those scenarios, we would not recommend that a child below high school level enter the high school guides. This is because a child in those specific situations would most likely not have the needed skills required to complete the level of work required in the World Geography guide. The placement chart is still the best place to begin to find the best fit for each child based on his/her skills. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
