LHFHG-getting ahead in storytime...okay?

Post by hs.mama07 » Sun Apr 14, 2013 12:33 pm

We're doing LHFHG with DS5 and he's loving it. His favorite part is story time He's always loved stories, frequently makes up his own, and says he wants to write books someday. When we come to a vacation time and have to say good-bye to our little friends in the green meadow for a while, he gets a little sad. He'll ask over and over throughout the break if we can please read more of the story to find out what happens next. So, before we start our first really long break, I was thinking of just continuing the storytime box through vacations (meaning I'd be ahead in storytime and finish it before the rest of the guide. I was then thinking of just doing other read-alouds until we finish the guide...continue using some of Carrie's questions and activities from the storytime box with the other books.

Does this sound like an okay idea?
If so, any recommendations for storytime books that are on a similar level to the Burgess books but aren't in future guides?

or, I'm just thinking as I type...maybe I could use some of the storytime books from Beyond (maybe do some from the classics list and then when we start beyond do the boys list, or something like that). He has excellent comprehension so I don't think that will be a problem in the harder books.

What do you think!? :-)

Those Thorton Burgess books are such fun, aren't they? :D Each chapter ends with a little cliffhanger, perfect for the little ears listening. I can see why your ds loves them, just as our sons do. :D If you continued reading the Storytime books during your vacation, would you continue to use the pacing of reading each day and the questions/writing activities planned each day? The reason I ask is the steady 'diet' of Burgess books and comprehension questions, beginning oral narration starters, and small writing assignments build a student's LA abilities little by little. Then, if you did this, you'd obviously finish the books before you finish LHFHG, and while you could read other Burgess books and pattern more questions for those books after Carrie's questions in the LHFHG, I wonder if this would end up being harder/less likely for you to consistently do on the fly and end up being a long time in the Burgess books for ds which may steal the thunder? So, that leads me to the thought that maybe it would be fun to just read other Burgess books during your vacation, and pick up with the LHFHG plans and LHFHG Burgess books when you return to it? What do you think?

Thanks Julie. Yes, I was planning on continuing to use one box per day through vacation, if I did it that way. But staying on schedule and just doing different books during vacation certainly does sound easier. I'll just have to make sure to either finish our current book or at least not leave it hanging too much when we come to break, lol. We're going year round so our breaks are never very long. Might look at some other books too...it'd satisfy his wanting to hear a story (distract him from his school story) and make coming back to Burgess extra exciting :-).

I've been amazed at how much my children remember from these books over the vacation time. We've taken up to a few weeks off (I'd say maybe 3 at the most) in the middle of one of them, and when we pick up my ds can tell me just what his friend (currently Danny Meadow Mouse) was up to! He remembers more than I do! :D I remember the same being true of my older ds a couple of years ago as well. So, I'd say, depending on how long your break is, you may not have to finish the current story. If you're talking summer vacation, though, that may be different!

I do agree with the suggestion of picking up other Burgess books to have fun with during your break!

There are many other Burgess books available in the same series. I'm reading the Burgess Bird Book for Children to all of my kids right now and they love it.

Thanks gals, I'll definitely look into the other Burgess books for vacation time. I wasn't too worried about him forgetting what he's read--he seems to remember everything :-)--I just didn't want to leave him in "suspense" too long. lol.
