Hi Carrie
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! A little more background on my kids...
My youngest (7 y/o ds) was able to handle the physical work of Bigger, but sometimes it seemed to me that the readings may have been just a little too mature for him to wrap his mind around. A First Book in American History was always just a tiny bit past his reach though many of the books were perfect. He wasn't doing the vocabulary completely on his own. I would help him look the words up. He was able to do the poetry copywork. After a year in cursive I have found that he really needs a little more time to develop his fine motor skills. I fear that the amount of physical writing in Preparing would be way too much. Also after thoroughly reading through the Preparing guide, some of the independent work would be too advanced as well. While he was able to do a lot of the work in Bigger, I really think he would have done better if we had waited on it for him. I really think the independent history and science work in Preparing would require me more than it should. I'm feeling this especially after reading through the assignments for
Draw and Write as well as
The Young Christian's Introduction to the Bible. With all that being said, we have completely loved our year and have totally fallen in love with HOD.
I was thinking if I did Beyond for my youngest I could require the same amount of copywork required in Bigger. I think I could easily add vocabulary words to go with our readings once a week, so that he gets more practice with dictionary work. A mom made science and history notebooking pages for Beyond that would help bring up the skill level. We would continue with dictation and narartion. He read the DITHOR level 2 books this year, and is ready for level 3. The problem I've had with this particular kid was that he was reading at 4, but his hands haven't caught up with his mind. I'd hate to not do Preparing as you have written it. I really feel he isnt' ready for it even at half speed. I know I would have to omit a bunch in Preparing if we did it next year. I really want him to be able to absorb as much as he can from that guide because it really is so awesome! I started trying to come up with my own plan for next year, but then I realized how completely spoiled I am in HOD. I appreciated even more how much thought went into each day's work!
My oldest (10 y/o ds) placed in Preparing this past year, but I combined him with his brother in Bigger with extensions. The only place he was lacking was in cursive instruction. He is doing great now though after a year of Cheerful Cursive

It was his first year home for HS, and I was a little intimidated to do 2 guides at once. I did add a few things to Bigger for him, but for the most part we did it as written. He has done a great job learning oral and written narrations. I was requiring 7-8 sentences per reading. We just started reading Bud and Me, and he gave me 21 sentences without my asking. He really loves that book! He has handled all of the extensions with ease. I started him in R&S 3 this year because he had little grammar instruction in PS. He has really enjoyed it. In fact, he once said, "I feel strangely happy diagramming sentences." Ha! I was wondering if I should bump him up to R&S 5 because it is done half speed in CtC and RtR. After reading through CtC and Preparing, I am feeling pretty confident that my oldest would place much better in CtC. He's smart as a whip, and loves writing. I think he could handle everything as written. I may even throw a few of the extensions in if he's handling the work easily (because I already own them.)
Another thing is that I'd really like to separate them. I never thought I'd say that. I know there is beauty in combining kids, but mine are very competitive. I fear that my oldest always barreling through work will eventually wear on my little guy's self esteem. He always plugs away and completes his work, but he really can't keep up with his brother's speed. I don't think he will be able to for at least a few years to come. The thing that draws me back to Beyond is that the more I read about CM the more I feel comfortable having one more gentle year for 2nd. I have seen the coming HOD guides, and they look challenging. I know we will get there eventually. I hope I've made some sense. Thank you so much for your wonderful guides. I have really found a home with HOD
