Reason #2 to use HOD - Writing Instruction

When I was at the HOD booth at the convention, I had opportunity to speak with several different people who were looking at HOD for the first time. Carrie, Mike, and Julie were VERY busy the whole time (yay for new HOD customers!
) which left me opportunity to talk to some people and share my experiences using HOD for the past 5 years.
One thing that became apparent to me as I explained some of the program, is how much I LOVE the writing aspect! I didn't realize it until I explained it to others. (Hmmmm, the Charlotte Mason method at work!)
Writing is such a scary subject for many moms to teach and so it is often avoided or not done well. I am one of those moms! I have always been afraid of teaching writing and dreaded it. Especially because you always hear that is the one area that homeschoolers do poorly and are unprepared for college, etc.
Carrie's system of teaching writing is so gentle and so easy to execute! It is little by little by little, each year adding a new layer. The kids don't even realize that they are learning to write. In fact, my 12 year old said to me last week that she had gotten out her old notebook and looked at it and she couldn't believe how much better her writing is now! This is NOT because I am a good writing teacher. It is because she has had CONSISTENT, purposeful, gentle, non-overwhelming, writing instruction every year.
For the gal asking about Sonlight vs. HOD recently, this is definitely a reason to consider HOD. I always thought SL gave writing assignments, but very little instruction in how to carry them out. HOD gives you straightforward, scheduled instruction that is never overwhelming and is so doable - thus, it never gets skipped!
I feel that my kids will be very well-prepared for college level writing. Each year, I am amazed at the progress they make with their writing skills. It's another beautiful thing about HOD!
