Hello,
I'll have a 2nd grader (7 years old) in September and am wondering if he could do Preparing Hearts which starts at 3rd grade. He can read at a level 1/2 and do copywork. Do you think it will be too advanced?

thanks for the input!

My son is a good student and has 1 week of Bigger left and will turn 8 next week. I would not do Preparing at age 7 and plan to slow it down for my son at age 8. Each guide increases in skill and there are so many skills packed into a guide. I would encourage you to look at the placement chart to see where your son would best place. You can find it at http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php.

thanks! the only reason i have him skipping bigger is because we are Canadians and its all american history, so i thought we could just jump to preparing for the world history. otherwise, i think bigger would be perfect for him.

I would not put a second grader in Preparing Hearts.

Hi Mommamel,

Just a quick message about being in a different country and going through the American History guides. We are in New Zealand, but we decided the Christ-centredness and the skills the children are gaining far outweigh the amount of American History. We will in later years, add in New Zealand History etc in place of things like the state study and the Presidents Study, although I'm not 100% percent convinced we will skip these, we may just add to the whole thing. I do read small bits of NZ History to them now and then already though, and of course as we travel we talk about the different places etc.

I hope you find HOD to be a real blessing in your family as it has been for our family.

Michelle.
