Where would you place an 7/8yr. boy that falls into Bigger on the placement chart every where but reading? He still struggles with reading. We are using ETC and just started lesson 10 in TRL. We have been doing LHFHG this year but it just doesn't seem to be enough. We wouldn't start our next guide until Sept. and he will be 8 in Dec. Thanks for any guidance and input.

Well, you follow the colomns in the order given. So age is more important than reading, reading more important than writing, etc. by that I would do Beyond. Or you can see how he progresses over the summer.

Just my own personal experience, don't do Bigger until he is reading. I pushed my dd8 into Bigger because I really want her to finish the history cycle before high school. She did Bigger just fine, but was not reading independently at the end so we couldn't start Preparing. Looking back it would have been better to take my time in the lower guides leaving more time to work on reading. If Beyond does not feel like it is enough, you can always go to the library or add in some new skill to work on (not related to academics). A skill not related to academics is super important for those later readers - IMO. They need to feel successful somewhere :). The reading will come. Sometimes it takes books that have nothing to do with school to encourage that. Don't rush, reading is more important!! :)

Can I just like this post? Great advice! Sometimes we all get too ahead of ourselves and want to rush into these wonderful looking programs when we need to slow down and enjoy the journey.
