Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
I have read that many here place a child in one level but then go up a level for grammar, math and maybe writing (the right side of the guide)? Would it work the other way too? Like placing the child in the guide that they would be in based on grammar, math and writing, but going up a guide for the history and science (left side)? Does that make sense? Would it work? Does anyone here do that?

Re: Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
I suppose it could.
I've done part of two guides for one year for my youngest, and I've also spread out a guide over 1 1/2 years when the next guide was gonna be too much too soon for another dd. But, these are perhaps younger guides that what you are talking about, where math and English/grammar tips are given.
To me though, the benefit of the guide you are in is for the history, geography, science, etc. Since each guide can be tailored/made custom by choosing an alternate math, English, etc., that is the way many of us prolly do it. I don't think there is that much extra info outside of lesson and page numbers for the other subjects mentioned to do it the other way around (considering projects, questions, etc that are given for history, geography, science, etc).
What guides did you have in mind doing this with? That may help for those that have used these guides for you to get a better answer than something generic like mine, as I might really be overlooking something at this late hour....
The upper guides do have other things on each page than the lowers, and for this reply I'm mainly thinking of the lower set ups. I'm just getting into MtMM with my oldest, starting our second week. The full spread with what is on each side and how the subjects rotate escapes me right now.

Tabitha,
Thanks for your response. I am not sure what I have going through my head.
I thought I did when I started my thread but now...

Re: Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
It seems to me that if you need to go down a guide for LA, reading, and dictation your child may not be ready to do the assignments on the left. I cannot imagine a child at the level of Beyond in LA skills doing the writing in Bigger, for example.
As the guides go up, there are more boxes than just LA and reading on the right, as well. For example, science is on the right side in Bigger.
I hope all that rambling of mine makes some sense to you.

Re: Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
I just wanted to agree with this wise advice - I do think this is true. Either moving the child to the guide before the guide he/she is doing OR going half-speed with the current guide would be good options though! Hope something here helps!lucsch wrote:It seems to me that if you need to go down a guide for LA, reading, and dictation your child may not be ready to do the assignments on the left. Re: Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
Very well stated. I couldn't find those words - lol - other than saying going by the history, etc. I am gonna have to make sure I bank that explination for some of my local friends who are curriculum hopping and questioning right now.It seems to me that if you need to go down a guide for LA, reading, and dictation your child may not be ready to do the assignments on the left. Those are the little things that you don't really think too much on at first glance. As a child is able to do more, more happens within each activity as you progress through the guides. As they build skill, they are doing more. The skills do flow nicely throughout the activities in each guide. I can certainly see now where if one is lacking in one of those questioned areas, that it will impact the work they can do in the others.

Re: Going Down a Guide for the Right Side
Thanks ladies. This has all helped. I also talked to Mike today and he was a huge help. Maybe by the time my youngest graduates in, lord willing, 2025, I'll have all of this figured out.
That seems like years and years away, but as I know all to well, it will be here tomorrow. Thanks again.
