I am planning to use Little Hearts with my two dd next year. My older will need more read alouds than just the Burgess set, and I had heard that the appendix has a list of supplementary books. Can anyone tell me more specifics about this. Are they chapter books? Are they tied into what we will be learning? Are they scheduled? Thank you for any insights you can give me!

I looked through the appendix. There are science, math, history books... no alternative chapter or "storytime" options. Carrie wrote in a thread recently that there really isn't an alternative to Burgess... the book-specific questions and activities are written right into the guide afterall.
Has your older child heard them before? You can always add some more reading but I doubt Carrie would recommend skipping Burgess entirely.
I enjoy the stories, and I am an adult. LOL. If your older thinks they're too babish well, its only a chapter at a time.
We check out piles of books from the library to read, just for fun... only after HOD though and usually later in the day.

Oh, I think I didn't understand your question.
Well, no, no other stories are in the appendix but HOD sells a list for $5 of Carries recommended reading. I noticed at the library a red folder with "classics" and "award winning books" titles, lists of all the not to be missed books. I bet your librarian has some lists, too. I want to get the HOD list because then I know it'll be Christian friendly...

The supplemental titles in LHFHG are listed in the appendix. They are excellent suggestions that accompany the history readings nicely according to unit number. These books are overall usually quite easy to find in your library, there are ample books suggested, and they can certainly be added for fun!

Still another option, if you are wanting a selection of all the genres to read aloud would be to use one of the read aloud sets from Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory this year. There are 3 sets of read alouds that are genre based that go with Beyond, and only 1 set is used during the course of Beyond's plans.

The same is true in Bigger Hearts. So there are many options! I do think the pp made a great comment about the Burgess books being key to do though. They do an outstanding job of building better reading comprehension skills and beginning oral narration skills, so be sure to first do those along with the Storytime box's plans. But other read alouds? Have fun choosing from the many options available!
In Christ,
Julie

Thank you both so much! I do plan to do the Burgess books. I just wanted to add a little for my first grader. I love Carrie's book selections, so I think I will use one of the lists from Beyond to supplement. Thank you for the advice. It has been very helpful!
Blessings,
Jenny

You're welcome. I am glad I helped, at first I thought you wanted replacement titles, then I almost immediately "got it", you wanted more chapter books. I like Julie's idea of adding one set of Beyond storytime books to LHFHG, if needed, for a first grader. What a good idea! All 3 of those sets look awesome, just need to reserve one set for Beyond.
I had to laugh though, Julie... my library.... uuuugh. I brought my HOD catalouge in, sat down at their computer and searched to see what (Beyond) storytime books they had, and which ones I definitely would need to purchase. They had Apple and Arrow and maybe Pooh Corner and Little House. Very frustrating. Glad I checked though so no "surprises" later. I haven't checked for the history titles in the LHFHG appendix. I will. (Probably a fruitless endeavor. Sigh)
