Kublai Khan and Mongolia (Preparing)

We are in Unit 27 - day 3 today of Preparing. It's on Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan, and Marco Polo. During my single years, I spent 4 and 1/2 years in Mongolia in '94-'99 doing mission type work. (a brief trip also in 1990) Most of that time, I lived in a very northern remote village close to where the "Reindeer people" live.
I got so excited reading this chapter...and then had to get out some pictures of Mongolia to show my ds. It's like it takes me back to the smells, tastes, the cold wind on my face, the warmth of the gher (yurt) fire on my face, etc. (I have to tell you all too, that God had to send this backwoods Oregon girl all around the world so I could meet my Pennsylvanian husband.) He was in Mongolia for 10 days...I was living there....We met, and the rest is "history" as they say.
But this is what I shared with my ds that I thought you all might want to share with your kiddos too, if you are in Preparing:
1. "Khan" means "King" in Mongolian
2. Kublai Khan sent for 100 Christian missionaries to come over and teach him about the Christian "religion". (He had a Christian mother and with Marco Polo, he heard some more about Jesus) He was trying to decide between Buddhism and Christianity for his empire. Out of the request for 100, only 10 began the journey, and all of them gave up as the trip was too long and hard. So Buddhism was the religion that he chose. What a difference the world might have been today, had they only obeyed Christ in spite of the hardship.
3. The Mongolian church today strongly believes that just as Ghengis King took over so much of the world being ruthless in his killing, that their mandate is to go as "missionaries" in the name of Jesus, the TRUE King and share His love and grace to those very same people that Ghengis Khan overtook in the 1200's. It is amazing to be in their churches and hear their heart for the very ones that their ancestors killed centuries ago.
So, anyway - I just had to share that little tidbit with you ladies....
