I want to really start drilling addition facts with my dd. She knows how to find the answers to addition and subtraction, but she needs to memorize them now. I was wondering what way would be the best to use flash cards. Some do families, eg. 0+4=4, 1+3=4, 2+2=4, 3+1=4, 4+0=4. Others may use 1+0=1, 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 1+3=4, 1+4=5, 1+5=6, etc. I'm just curious about which way is the most successful, especially with children who have dyslexia or visual perceptual difficulties. Also, what are some techniques used in practicing them. Do you just keep showing the card and saying it? Do you also have your child write them? Do you sing them, like some do with skip counting? How did Charlotte Mason teach math facts? :)

I'm not really sure what is the best way, but I happened to speak with a wonderful lady that might be able to you. She is the creator of a program called IdeaChain. It is mostly for reading comprehension and expressive language disorders, but it apparently helps with math also. My son has dyslexia too, and I always thought that he was very visual, but what she helped me to see is that he is unable to create visual images on his own or to connect language to visual images. I'm not sure if it will help with your particular situation, but she was wonderful to speak to and is extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

Here is a quote from their website
Does IdeaChain help with math?
IdeaChain can be particularly helpful when working with math word problems. Many individuals have have difficulty because they cannot see, mentally, the situation described in the problem. Once they grasp the action in the problem they are able to do the math correctly. In addition, memorizing math facts has a visual component which can be strengthened by using IdeaChain.
