Does HOD include a scripture memory system?

Post by mamaduke » Sat May 31, 2008 7:13 am

I'm looking at making a file card system for daily/weekly/monthly scripture memory and review for my family.

Does HOD include a plan or system for memorizing scripture with review (besides the CD songs)?

Thank you,
Julie

Yes, scripture memory is more than just the songs. They learn one verse a week, and I have found that if you follow the plan as written, they usually have the verse down in 1-3 days.

Oh that's good. So do any families do other systems for scripture memory besides what HOD offers? I thought it might be nice for the family to be working on the same verses together. Maybe I'll make cards for the rest of us to work on based on what we study in LHTH. I know the ABC book has some verses, but not sure if they are very difficult. I think large portions are good to work on too.

We love what HOD does with scripture memory so we will continue with that. But this year we will also be adding some memory of Proverbs to gain some wisdom. It fits to me with the theme that Bigger has. So we will do what is there but in addition really break down some proverbs and talk more in depth about the meaning. When we do Preparing the same thing will be done with the Psalms. I feel like since Carrie has done all the work making everything connect it is a good time to study those books of the Bible more in depth. 8) So we will kind of just embellish what she has done for us.

Having said that though it is nice to know even if my grand plans do not happen we will be plenty covered with what is there in the program.

for extra scripture memory you could try the method explained here...

We haven't done it. But it looks easy enough. We'll probably just stick to straight HOD for the first few months. If we fell we need more, we'll add this in when we read the Bible with dad.

Julie,

The only scripture memory in LHTH would be out of the ABC Bible Verses. (At least through what we've done so far...)

I think the memory work builds with the programs in HOD though.

My kids are in AWANA here, so they do quite a bit of scripture memory with that. As a family we went through Our 24 Family Ways last year that had a memory verse each week, too.

Kathleen, thanks for that clarification on what LHTH includes. Are your dc memorizing the verses in ABC bible verses or is it mostly just repetition?

We don't have other memory systems but dh and myself really need something to make it happen. We've worked on a few verses with ds but we forget to practice with him. I've been hoping that as we start school we would have an easy way to incorporate that routine.

MotherJoy! That is the system I've been looking at today! I showed it to dh and he wants to start it. So I may just write down the verses from ABC and do those as a family. I'm concerned that those will be too easy, or not lengthy or especially not whole verses. I haven't received my book yet, so I cannot look up the scripture to compare it to the Bible.

Kathleen, Are they complete verses? Not just a short paraphrase?

Thanks for the input! Be blessed Lord's Day tomorrow!

Julie,

The moms are doing such a good job of answering your questions! I just wanted to pop-in and let you know that LHTH is the only one of our programs that does not include daily Scripture memory practice. All of our other programs have the kiddos learn a verse or more a week, with practice scheduled daily. :D

In LHFHG and Beyond we do verses that go with Hide Em in Your Heart and with the history in our programs. In Bigger... we do Proverbs memorization. In Preparing... we do Psalms memorization, including entire Psalms.

By the time kids get to Bigger... and Preparing... they are writing the verses they are memorizing each week to help them remember them.

Systematic cripture memory is one of THE most important things to us!

Blessings,
Carrie

Julie,

I actually don't have the ABC Bible Verses book, as I got Playtime Devotions for the devotional. I'd say you could easily have your child memorize the part of the verse recommended in the book, and you and your husband could memorize the entire verse or surrounding verses by writing them out from your Bible when you know the reference. I've heard other moms talk about that "memory box", and I think it sounds like a great idea to implement, too!
