Do you find...

That your children memorize their math facts with Singapore? Do your children test well using this program? Strengths? Weaknesses? Any thoughts would be appreciated! 8)

Amey,

I have used Singapore intermittently through the years. I did not find it strong in memorization of math facts. We use a seperate program for drill.

The kids don't drill math facts, however they do learn them over time from doing the work. This is better for us. Drills don't go over well here. Although I have started to do time drills to get my 7yo to think "faster". He dawdles too much and forgets what he's supposed to be working on... :?

We've used Singapore for six years over here. They do not include drills in the curriculum, but as an earlier poster said, I have found that through the reviews and continued use, the kids do gradually get them down.

I have just started adding math facts copywork each day to strengthen their memorization of the facts. I just choose a family each day for each child to copy: 3 x 1 = 3, 3 x 2 = 6, and so on. Flash cards just do not go over well here. My kids balk at them and I don't enjoy doing them either!

Singapore is a very strong, well done math program. We have had great success with it. You asked about test scores.... my oldest scores VERY high... over six grade levels above where he is on his general math test scores.

I know that not every program is for everyone, but I really think that Singapore math is an excellent math program.

Anything similar for other fact tables besides multiplication? Looks awesome! My 5yo will love it when the time comes.

My son really enjoys this http://www.iknowthat.com/com/L3?Area=L2_Math math drill. It's Leon's Dojo or something. The little kungfu turtle kicks the bag w/ the correct answer and if it's incorrect the bag bangs him in the head! My son loves it! It' does addition and multipication I think.

Hi Amey! You've gotten some good advice here already. I just wanted to say that before you worry about memorization of facts, you may just want to do Singapore along with the hands-on math activities in the HOD guides. You more than likely may find that this is a powerful combination that is enough to produce proficiency with facts.

I just decided to pull out the math flashcards this past few days to see how my ds was doing with them (since we didn't do this during the past school year), and he did very well with them. That particular son of mine is pretty naturally good with numbers though, so it could be I'll be doing something more with my next sons!:o

But maybe, before adding more to your plate, you may just want to give what's written a whirl and add more if necessary - just a thought! :D

In Christ,
Julie
