Preparing Science Questions

Post by Rachel » Mon Jan 28, 2013 11:48 pm

Do you require your dc to answer the Preparing Day 4 science questions in complete sentences? My ds (10) was not advanced enough in writing/spelling skills to be able to handle that without frustration at the beginning of this school year, but now that he has advanced somewhat, do you recommend I ask him to answer in complete sentences in order to prepare him for CTC?

I require my ds to answer them with complete sentences. I don't know if that is what we are supposed to do though.

NO!!! :)

There are plenty of times in the curriculum where they are required to write in sentences. In my opinion, the purpose of the science questions is to check their comprehension and understanding. It is not an exercise in grammar.

Hmmm...not sure if there is a right or wrong way to do this. I require my kids to answer in complete sentences, because I think it gives them extra practice working on good sentence structure. I think it also reinforces the info in their brains when they have to write it out completely. I am not sure if it is necessary, but this is my preference for my kids. I am guessing kids will vary in ability and parents will vary in preference. :)

This is how we do it... some days I don't even make her write her answers. If she doesn't know an answer I make her look it up, but I do not always make her write them. I thought it was just to make sure they knew how to make sure they know the answers or look them up since it gives them page numbers. Fact checking and all that.

Thanks for your responses! Does anyone know if the science in CTC requires a lot more writing, or how it is in comparison to Preparing science?

I would say that the science questions in CTC are about the same as in Preparing at least in terms of length of answer and writing. Oh and just to weigh in, I'm one that requires my dc to write their answers in complete sentences. :D
