Substitutions for LHFHG

Post by tremains » Sun Jan 27, 2013 9:19 pm

I would like to know how confusing it will be for me if I choose to do LHFHG, but I choose my own Math, Phonics and Handwriting. I already have K-5 Abeka Arithmetic and Phonics books that I bought awhile back and due to an extremely tight budget, I'm considering using those. Plus, if the handwriting section only covers printing in Kindergarten, which I assume it does (not cursive yet), then I also have a book that will suffice for this. So, I'm just wondering how specific the "checkboxes" I have read about are in listing what information to cover to complete each box. Will it be confusing if I am using different books for all three of these areas than are recommended by HOD or will I just choose a few pages from my books to take the place of those listed? Will this affect any other part of the program continuity?

Also, would the Math, Handwriting and Phonics books be the only disposable books for LHFHG? I am beginning this experience with my oldest and will have two more going through the process eventually, so I'm just wondering if the LHFHG manual, Science, Fine Motor Skills, History books, etc... are all going to be re-usable for my other children?

I use different Math, Handwriting and Phonics with LHFHG for the same reasons as you. I also have two children combined in this guide and they both use different Math, Handwriting and Phonics from each other, and it works out fine and there is no confusion on my part. I just use the guide for everything else, and love it! HTH

Not a big deal at all. Just use those boxes and check them off (if you like to check off things) if you do that subject. It helps remind you to do them and it's somewhat of a record. :) If you look at the sample week of pages you will see what I mean. The only thing that would change (possibly) is the time it takes you to finish all of the work. Carrie gives time estimates for the boxes so that could be different.

OK, great, thanks! Could you also let me know which books that I will be purchasing from HOD will be re-usable and which will be disposable? Science, Fine Motor Skills, History, etc... will these all be reusable for my next child and I will only need to repurchase the Math, Handwriting and Phonics ones each time I go through the program? I just have not had a chance to see the material first-hand, so I'm trying to visualize and make sure I know what I will be spending each time a child goes through each program...

If I am thinking correctly, the only one(s) that you will have to buy for each child is the Fine Motor Skills books. Now that's not counting math, phonics, and writing. Those of course depend on what you use. Does that answer your question? :D

Yes, that is what I needed to know. I just want to know for future budgeting how far each of these books will take us! Thanks for your help!

I have another question... I just found that I have a copy of "Our Father's World" that someone has given me. I get lots of odds and ends from other people... Anyway, I'm concerned that if I start my son in LHFHG this year at the Kindergarten level and use the Kindergarten Science book (The World God Made) and then move onto Beyond Little Hearts for next year, I will never utilize the "Our Father's World" book that I already have... So, I'm wondering if I should just use the "OFW", even though it is a 1st grade level text this year, or do some people use LHFHG for two years in a row and just repeat the history and Bible, but replace the Math, Science and Phonics with the 1st grade levels? I hate to not use this "OFW" text that I already have... My son will be 5 1/2 in August for the start of the year.

I use "OFW" world with my Kinder (was 5 in Nov.) and it is just fine for him. So, I would say to use it. JMHO :D

I looked through the sample lesson plans posted on the website and noticed the Thinking Games and Science Discovery portions only mention "The World God Made" text and applicable reading portions. It does not tell what parts of "Our Father's World" correspond to that day. Was this just something that was left out of these 5 days of Unit 1, so it doesn't show up in the example or is this typical?

The pages for each box are listed in the appendix for Our Father's World. HTH.
