HOD and Me

Post by glperky » Wed Jan 16, 2013 8:30 am

I have a thread going about starting my high schooler in HOD this fall. I have concerns that the HOD way of doing things may be hard on him starting this late in the game. However, I have gotten so good tips on how to help him and am open to more, if you have any to share. But, I am also wondering if I am going to know how to do my part of HOD, like the dictation and narration parts considering we have never done these things before. Are the instruction on how to do theses things in the higher guides? Will I be lost and not know how to do it all? Thanks!

Our oldest didn't come home until after 6th grade. It took us a bit to find what worked, so it was 9th grade before we really got into a CM/HOD style of learning. It worked well for my ds and I think he benefited greatly, especially in history, literature, and Bible application. As long as you understand that you and your student will need a bit of time to learn how to do it the CM/HOD way you'll be fine. One of the wonderful things about HOD is all the hard work Carrie puts into the guides- so we don't have to. IDK if the upper guides have narration/dictation tips, but we're here to help and there are plenty of online resources.

We started with HOD in 8th grade, a couple years ago, and it really was very natural to use almost from the beginning. HOD is SO user-friendly, that just following the guide each day is almost "effortless". ;)

There may be a little "learning curve" as you go, but I think starting HOD at any age is pretty easy to do, because of the curriculum itself. Carrie has done all the hard work for us moms. :)
