LHFHG...planning ahead

Post by rod_squad4 » Tue Jan 15, 2013 9:04 am

Hi. Next year I will have a 1st grade ds7 and a kdg dd. DD is eager to learn and will do well with anything. Ds...not so sure about. Hes been in a 3 day a week kdg but we all think hes ready to come home for 1st grade. I had originally thought I would do LHFHG with the both of them but Im kind of wondering if I shouldnt go super easy on myself next year and just do phonics, writing and math. Just focus on the basics. I think right now they are about in the same place and I think dd could race ahead with no problems. I also have an older daughter who has been home for a while. So Ill be going from 1 to 3 and a little worried about how to manage that.
SO two questions....

1. Could I do LHFHG with an 8 year old, even if he was in the 2nd grade? I do not want to hold him back but I certainly do not want to stress him out.
2. What do you do when dd4, passes up ds6? I want to teach them together but I dont want him to get frustrated because things come so easily for her.

Can you sense a little anxiety about my boy? We are in such a great place now and I just want to stay here! THanks in advance for your wisdom, you ladies are always so wonderful.

Good morning! So sorry this post has been overlooked. I think everyone is pretty busy, things are pretty quiet here.

Go ahead and look at the placement chart and check things there. But, I would encourage you to go ahead and start with LHFHG (unless the chart shows something else). You could even start 1/2 speed, meaning, do the left side of the day one day and the right side the next day. Or, if you wanted to do math and phonics every day, just do a few boxes of the other skills one day and the remaining boxes the next day. That way neither one of you will be overwhelmed. You could always move to full speed when you felt ready. They are many ways of doing the 1/2 speed.

I'm not sure how old your daughter is from your post. Look at the placement chart for her as well. If she fits in LHFHG I would try combining them, that would be for the history, science, BIble and storytime. You could do the math and phonics work separately so there is no "comparing".

Hope some of this helps. Check the chart and come back and let us know what you think. Let us know if you have more questions.

Blessings!

I agree with Gwenny and would go ahead and start LHFHG even if just half speed. You could do full speed 3 R's with your oldest but keep your youngest at half speed pace for the 3 R's along with the guide. I think you will find that doable.
Grace and peace,
