Can I say that I LOVE It. I did the other options with my now 7yo when he was 5 and when I went to order for my now 5yo I was worried but after doing about 50 pages I am convinced this is a great choice. I am also doing 1B with my 7yo and I can see where the K level is teaching my 5yo stuff he will need when he hits the next level.

Are you able to use the new math book with the old LHFHG manual? I am wondering if you can still use the hands on ideas in the manual. That was my son's favorite part. Carrie hasn't had time to rewrite the hands on for the new math book right? I am curious how you are doing it.

The one problem I do have it the binding. My son can't write on the left hand page because it won't lie flat. I am just going to cut them apart. It is miserable and hard. Today my daughter helped me push it so hard it started tearing the binding but we finally got it to lie flat. Why do publishers think this is a good binding for a book that they have to write in.

Oh well other than that I LOVE the book. It will teach him so much that he will need in the 1st grade ones I know that because I am doing 1B with my 7yo now.

I agree with you on the binding problem and loving the book! My little guy is learning so much to be ready for 1st.

I know it's amazing isn't it and he loves doing the book. Some days he doesn't want to stop.

I went through the LHFHG manual, typed out my favorite math activities on the computer, printed it, and matched up Carrie's activities with the appropriate lessons in Essential. It took a few hours (split up in a week's time), but I couldn't stand to miss out on Carrie's fun activities - especially the ones involving food

Oooooh... is there any way you could share that? We have the old workbooks and by the time my daughter is in LHFHG, the new math hands on instructions will probably be out, but I bet others who have the old hands on manual and the new books would love to see your list.

Well, it isn't exactly typed in an organized way! I just went through the manual, typed the activities in general categories (counting, adding, patterns, shapes, etc.) And then printed and cut into strips. I placed each activity as a bookmarks on the page where it fit best in the curriculum.

I am willing to take a little more time and add in lesson/page number matches on my list, but that would be copyrighted material...and I don't know if Carrie would want that shared?

You are so gracious to mention the copyright. Thank you so much! I am impressed that you have worked to match up the activities from LHFHG to the new math (something which I haven't had time to do yet)! That is wonderful! Technically, as far as copyright goes, the only copyright infringement in this situation was the photocopying of the math activities to place inside your math books for sorting purposes (something which we will definitely overlook as your heart was in the right place and you took time to do what we have not yet gotten a chance to do).

So, as far as sharing your match-up plan with others, you can certainly do so if desired by just making sure not to copy or include any part of the activities from LHFHG in your plan. That means that if you just list the pages of the Essentials 'K' math with the matching "Unit" and "Day" of the math activity from LHFHG you will be fine! It is completely up to you though whether you wish to type something like that up for others.

My one request is that you not share the schedule in a post on this board, the reason being that it could confuse families who search the board in the future once we do rewrite the plans. But, you can easily share your match-up through private message or email. You are so kind to consider sharing with others, and we definitely want to give families every opportunity to be successful with the Essentials K math. Thank you for your willingness to encourage others on the HOD path! What a blessing this board is!

After reading what Carrie wrote I'd really appreciate a list like this in private message. You are incredibly sweet to do this! I was planning to do the same thing this summer since I don't need it quite yet. What a blessing!

I'm so happy that Carrie chose the essentials K math books. I used these for my oldest dd for K along with one of the old earlybird books, and I love them. My second dd will be in K this coming fall so I will be using these again. What a great idea about finding the hands on lessons to match the workbook pages. I do have a question for you Carrie though about when you do get to re-writing the math plans. Will people need to buy the new edition of the guide in order to get the new math schedule? Just wondering how that will work out for those who already own Little Hearts.
