Please explain emerging readers

Post by amysue277 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 9:37 pm

Hi,
I have a 6 year old son currently doing AAR level 2. Since they haven't published level 3 yet, I'm considering starting the emerging readers with him. I have a few questions, as I don't really understand how to teach reading with them.

In the Beyond guide, how is the instruction laid out? Are there lesson plans for each day, or do you just go at your child's pace? Also, beyond just reading the book, what else does the manual have to offer for instruction?

Can anyone describe the emerging readers please? Thanks!

Amy

Hey Amy. I also use AAR, and I think your child will do well with Emerging readers. For a long while at first, they will just be doing the Bible. The child reads the day's required reading aloud to you, and you help them as they go along with any words they have trouble with. Then the guide has questions for after each reading. It is really easy to do.

Shannon (and others)
Do you feel that after AAR 2, the emerging readers will be at his level? Acc. to the program, he should have "most" of his phonics instruction completed at the end of level 2. However, there is level 3 and 4 planned so I wonder if I should wait for that, or possibly even do both? Do you feel the ER's are enough reading instruction this early on? I feel like I will need to do more than him just reading to me...comprehension, story elements, predicting, etc. Former teacher here :-)

I would love to hear any others experiences with the ER's.

thanks!

The Emerging Reader's Set (ERS) includes questions for each day that vary to include all the levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (knowledge, comprehension, synthesis, analysis, application, and evaluation). Narration starters are also given at least once a week to provide dc with an introduction to Charlotte Mason oral narration skills. The progression of difficulty of reading levels moves from the familiar Bible stories in a children's Bible to Level 4 readers by the close of the set. From one former teacher to another, I think you will be delighted by the Emerging Reader's set. :D One thing we did with our early reader was to have him read through both Bible choices. This adds 9 weeks to the set's length, and it gives time for growth as dc have more time reading what they are more familiar with in the form of excellent Bible stories. Also, completion of the ERS prepares dc beautifully for the rigor of "Drawn into the Heart of Reading," as genres are varied in the ERS, and story elements are touched upon as well. HTH! :D

I found with my son that once he started the Beginning Bible his reading took off and he didn't want to use a phonics program anymore because to him it was just more busy work (we used the ETC books along with it). We dropped the ETC books and he has done great with the readers. We are using DITHOR level 2 right now and he is doing great :)

DITHOR will also cover those story elements. Former teacher here too : )

I am not familiar with the upper levels of AAR, so I am not sure how far we will go with it. I kind of figure once she can read the emerging readers, we will stop AAR and just do DITHOR and continue with All About Spelling.
