If your child knew how to read early...

...what did you focus on in K? Did you simply continue to read various books, or did you start with something else? My 4.5 year old is begging me to learn to read, she's basically teaching herself. We're going to start really working on it this coming month, if she does pick it up quickly (before we start LHFHG this fall) what would you be focusing on next? I know this is such a newbie question, but with her being my first child, I'm a little clueless

Once she has done a phonics program, I would just move onto the emerging readers. The list is in the back of the LHFHG guide as well as in BLHFHG. Hope that helps.

Thank you. I haven't yet purchased anything, so I didn't know if it gave any specific list or instruction along those lines. I appreciate it!

It actually even gives questions to go with each portion which I think is great. It certainly is going to be a great help to my 7yr old boy when he gets there, we are working away on phonics and finally making some progress, but I think the fact that Carrie has included the comprehension and thinking stuff in the questions is a tremendous asset to the emerging readers.

I'm nodding in agreement here!
The questions helped develop our dc's reading comprehension and beginning narration skills in a balanced way. We are using the Emerging Reader's Set along with LHFHG and enjoying it immensely. HOD's reading progression flows seamlessly with the guides and can be started at any point. Enjoy the ERS - it is such a joy to see dc being excited to learn to read! The books chosen are excellent and foster a love for reading right from the very start.
