New here...can you help me choose a curriculum?

I realize that this is the middle of the year now but I recently pulled my children out of school to homeschool. We had a brief run with Alpha Omega's Monarch program which I quickly determined would not work. I would really like to use this one but I'm not sure if I should try to combine or use two different versions. Can you please recommend to me which one?

I have an 8 and 9 year old who are basically at the same level. They are 2nd and 3rd grade but my older one is a bit slower with reading and the younger one is advanced so it puts them on the same level.

I have a 12 year old 6th grader. I am thinking that combining them would not work.

Suggestions?? Thanks!!!

Welcome to HOD. It sounds like your 8 & 9 yo could combine. But, I don't see that your 12yo would fit into the same guide. That would mean only 2 guides. There are many who use 3 and 4 guides, so you would be fine with 2. Look at the placement chart on the HOD website to find the exact fit. I'm not sure how to post the link. Sorry. I'm sure others will respond to offer more help. :)

Thanks!! Well I couldn't contain myself to wait !! So I just used the placement chart to (hopefully) pick the right ones.

I ordered Bigger Hearts for my 8 and 9 year old

Restoration to Reformation for my 12 year old

I am very excited about trying this out. I've scoured the internet reading reviews and there are some very compelling testimonials about HOD. It was just too much to resist!

So we take the plunge!! I know it's mid year but we got a false start and I just decided it was better to go for it then plod along as we have been. Thanks!!

I think you made a great choice! :D There are many who begin a guide mid-year. If you take time off in the summer, just pick up where you left off in the fall. :) You're going to love HOD! :D

Welcome! :D We're glad to have you here! :D We pray that you will find the fit you are seeking with HOD. :D

Make sure that you spend some time training your 6th grader to do the 'I' or 'Independent' boxes in RTR, as it will take some time for a child coming out of public school to adjust to a more Charlotte Mason living books style curriculum like HOD. :D

As you have questions, feel free to ask. Correct placement is so important in finding the right fit. :D If you do get the materials for RTR and feel that they are too difficult, you can always return them and take a look at CTC. Without knowing more about your older child, I'm not sure whether her placement will suit her. :D If she is a good reader, good writer, good at following written directions, and pretty independent, then RTR should fit her well. :D

The same is true for your younger pair, as Bigger is probably a good choice. However, if you have questions ask away. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

HOORAY! :D We did RTR and BHFHG with our dc at the same time (as well as LHTH for the little guy) a few years back, and really enjoyed our year! Carrie gave some great tips. Welcome to the HOD Board, BTW, and we all are looking forward to getting to know you here! :D

In Christ,
Julie
