Reading on Kindle

I just had someone tell me that reading on a computer has been found to be helpful for those with vision problems. Has anyone here ever heard that? Does anyone have your child read any books like that?

YES!!! My dd9 is dyslexic and is reading on a kindle now and said "Mom this is so much easier." I also just recently found an article in the Washington Post by a research group that has an app. to test if spacing and text size is helpful for improving reading fluency of your child. Their research showed a dramatic improvement in reading fluency when text spacing and size could be adjusted. The app is called DYS its for ipad and iphone. The research was done at the University of Padua in Italy and at Aix-Marseille University of France.

"When you increase the letter spacing the reading improves on the fly," says Padua neurophyschlogist Andrea Facoetti. The increase in reading speed worked out to about one-third of a syllable per second.

"Children with dyslexia can read faster and more accurately when letters in text are more widely spaced, showing an immediate improvement equal to a year's worth of classroom instruction, Italian and French Sientists reported Monday."

Article: Wall Street Journal: Tuesday, June 5th 2012.

Hope this helps you! I couldn't believe the difference I could just hear when we tinkered with spacing and text size on our kindle.

Best of luck,
Kim

Thanks, Kim. That is very encouraging. I'm not up on all the technology. My dd23 should be able to help me in this area. My dd9 has never been tested, but if I had to guess, beside the eye tracking, I really believe there could be some dyslexia. I've been wanting to take her to visit a friend from our church who has dyslexia and have Angie read for her. She had struggles when she was in school, so she could possibly give me some tips. Maybe it would give me some insight if dyslexia could be a problem. I do not believe it is just eye tracking. Does your son read HOD books on the kindle? This information is exciting! :D
