Carrie started a thread where we could share how our children are progressing. I know HOD is written for the benefit of our children, but I must say that I have been learning a lot myself, and enjoying it......maybe more than my dd. I did not like history when I was in school. Over the years, while homeschooling our older children, I was becoming more interested in certain aspects of history and definitely keeping up with 'history in the making'. Since using HOD, I have thoroughly enjoyed the history readings. The living books are great! So much more meat in them. Yesterday I was reading to Angie from "Stories of Great Americans". It was the story of "One Little Bag of Rice", which told of Thomas Smith and how he was the first to grow rice in America. I almost gave details of the story, but those who have not gotten there yet, I won't spoil it. It is a very fascinating story, and I have to say that it is more proof of how God was taking care of those early settlers in this blessed country. I was sharing this story with my dh. I don't think he knew the story either. We are from the north, so this was new to both of us, as this story took place in South Carolina. So, thank you, Carrie, for enlightening the parents through HOD. It certainly beats textbooks!

I could not agree more! I was not interested in history when I was in school. It was simply a bunch of facts and dates for me to memorize so I could pass a test, and the textbooks were dry as dry could be. I have been inspired by HOD's history too, and I have learned to enjoy it more and more with each passing year! I am glad to hear I am not the only one who felt this way about history. The books we are reading now for history for HOD are incredible - they bring people and events to life for me, and the funny thing is, the dates stick better that way anyway. Thanks so much for sharing your story about sharing with dh and learning to enjoy history more yourself - I can totally relate!

When I used to read about people who didn't enjoy history growing up, it always would amaze me. I couldn't understand how anyone wouldn't find it fascinating.

But then one day it dawned on my what the difference was. I grew up with a father who is a history buff. So our family vacations were going to reenactments, living history museums, historic cities or landmarks, including Philadelphia, Gettysburg, New York City, Washington, D.C., Williamsburg, various presidential libraries, West Point... I could go on and on... History was always alive for me, so of course I enjoyed it! This is what HOD does for our children (and us!). It helps to make history alive, without having to travel all over the country. So I will definitely join with you in thanking Carrie for sharing all these fantastic stories with us parents too! I am always amazed at how much I learn along with the children, and how much fun we all have in the process.

It still amazes me that people didn't like history growing up! History/Geography and Spelling were my favorite subjects as a child - still are for that matter.
I didn't totally realize until I read the pp that part of that could be due to my mom and her teachings. She made history fun, & while we didn't get a chance to travel far we went all over Texas and Arkansas, and even once made a trip to Vicksburg. Our homeschool group studied geography together with food, fun & games, and the written/oral book report, so that was a living approach I suppose.

The 2 things I hated as a child were Science and Math, and it does surprise me that I enjoy most of HOD's Science readings, exploration, etc.
I still don't enjoy math. I have learned a lot from HOD skill wise, and what can be expected at each age. Art, is the other thing that HOD makes enjoyable.
Never was into it before, but a lot of times I join in on the project.

It's amazing how many things I've learned to enjoy and appreciate on this homeschool journey that I had very little appreciation for in the past. It is surprising to me, when I look back, how many things were just not covered (or I have very little memory of covering) in my past educational experiences.

What a different journey I am having now with my own 4 boys! I am so thankful for the education that they are receiving! I find each year more fascinating than the previous year.
