Spelling technique that is working

Post by Tracee » Thu Nov 08, 2012 3:05 pm

I just wanted to share a new spelling technique that we've been using, and it has been working with great success. Here is how it works:

You give your student a list of spelling words and they either copy them onto notebook paper, or you can write the list on notebook paper for them. First, they begin by underlining each sound, not letter, they hear in the word. While they are underlining the sound, they also say the sound out loud. For example: boat would be b oa t The sounds would be (b sound, long o sound, and t sound). After that, they write the word again saying the sounds when they write the letter. It's important that they say the sound while they are writing. It really cements it into their brain. They are using using auditory, kinesthetic and visual learning skills all at the same time. I've been amazed at how well this is working.

Just wanted to share. It's been working too well for us to not share with everyone. :D

This would work as you do your Spelling List words planned in HOD. After the dc study the index card with the word written in black, they then could say the sound as they write each letter/chunk on their markerboard. This could be a nice added step for dc that could use that extra help in 'hearing' each part of the word as they write. Thanks for sharing, Tracee, and I am so glad this is working with your ds! :D
