HELP! State Study (Rev2Rev) wk. 12 day 3

Post by Heather4Him » Wed Nov 07, 2012 2:49 pm

Our daughter is trying to do Ohio for the state study today, and the 50 States Under God book seems to have a misprint. On p. 15, under the facts section, only the first sentence is about OH, and then it goes into information about Louisiana (the next state). Are we missing something, or what have others done for this day/state?

Thanks in advance!

Heather (WI)

I went to look at this since ds will do this today and I am realizing that many of the points listed under each state don't pertain to that state. For example if you look at the second listing under Louisiana it is about the Rocky Mountains and Wyoming and the second and third listing for Mississippi on page 16 don't talk about Mississippi. It looks like they are just going chronological and listing things that occurred around the time that the State entered statehood? I haven't ever paid attention to this because my ds does it independently and we have another little state facts book that he likes to pull facts from.

Yes, I think you're right, Lynn. It does appear to be chronological, but it is odd how the information appears in the state box, but does not really involve that particular state. It would be nice to have a state fact book to use, too!

Ladies,

I just wanted to clarify, as I think you've already figured out that under each state there is always at least one or more facts that directly relate to the state being studied. :D However, other facts are also included under each state that pertain to significant events that were happening in other parts of the U.S. around the time that the state (being studied) became a state. This provides a fascinating view of that broadens the scope much beyond simply the state being studied. It does a great job of providing a bigger picture of what was going during this same time, providing context for the state's year of admission and formation. :D

Beyond this timeline there are also 4 in-depth pages about each state covering interesting facts, the sate nickname, motto, bird, tree, flower, historical sites and descriptions, capital, capitol building, neighboring states, state, flag, state seal (and a description of the meaning of both flag and seal), descriptions of important people related to the state, the state's chief service industry, chief agricultural product, chief mineral product, chief manufactured product, a historical vignette (often Christian) of an important event in the state's history and a quiz over the abbreviation, capital, nickname, and surrounding states. :D

I mention this so that you can see that each state is covered very thoroughly and interestingly in this format and to also show that the timeline is meant to provide context to the more in-depth study of each state. We pray that may enjoy using the 50 States Under God study as much as we have with our own boys. After doing two different state studies with my oldest son, I find this one complete, interesting, and refreshing! 8)

Blessings,
Carrie
