Question about BLHFHG

Post by wgwilliams » Wed Oct 31, 2012 9:58 am

Hello, I am new here and I have a few questions. I have been researching HOD for a few weeks now and I have pretty much decided this is the curriculum for us. My daughter is 6 about to be 7, she can ready very well but has no desire. She also has no desire to write. She loves math, but again no desire with the current curriculum. My question is, we would be starting it now (or as soon as i order it and get it in). So given the 34 weeks i will be behind. Is there anyway to purchase only what I need from this point? Will we be confused if we start at our corresponding week? Or are there things we can skip in order to be on target to complete and finish by the end of May?

Also, how in the world do i even know what to order? I am so confused with the basic and complete and deluxe package and what to choose!! Can someone please help me with that?

Thanks in advance!!

Wendy

Hi Wendy, welcome to the board! I will try ti answer some of your questions and I'm sure others will chime in to clear things up. I'm assuming you've looked at the placement chart and have decided that Beyond is the best fit. The guide comes as a bound book so there is no way to order lessons individually, nor would it be advisable. The skills build slowly and build from one week to the next so I wouldn't think you would want to jump in in the middle. Also, there is are no hard and fast rules as to when to finish a guide. I read a thread about this somewhere and I remember someone saying that when they logged their state required 180 days they simply stopped where they were at and picked right back up after the summer. Since your dd is at the younger end of the guide and doesn't have a lot enthusiasm for reading and writing I would take it slow and not put any undo pressure on her (or yourself) to "catch up".

As far as ordering goes, if you want everything as is, order the Deluxe pkg. If you want everything as is but want to use the library or books you already have for the read alouds then you want the Basic pkg. if you are really low on funds, already have the books in the basic pkg. or want to purchase them elsewhere then you want the economy pkg. which has the bare bones can't make it work without them resources (you do need to choose a reading program from the three listed. I would suggest the emerging readers for your dd).

I hope this is helpful and not more confusing! Feel free to ask plenty of questions, we're all in this together :D
