DITHOR

My 9 year-old loves reading and I wasn't sure which level DITHOR to go with this year because we are new to HOD and I chose level 2. Some of the books are so short with like 3 or 4 page chapters. It's so hard for her to top with just one chapter.

Help me figure out how to handle the activities/workbook stuff with her when she ends up reading a bunch at once.

And, what level do you think I should buy for her next? Skip to 4/5?

For short books you could do them over 5 days so you would do 3 books for that unit. I have my 9yo in level 4/5 (she's turning 10 this month and in 5th grade). What grade would you consider your 9yo to be?

I consider her "4th".

Well, the workbook you are using is level 2/3. If you don't think the books are enough, you could get some of the level 3 books from the library. Did you get the sample book list? Scholastic has on their website a tool you can use to get the genre and reading level of books you might own. you can use any books you want, you can even use level 4 books with the level 2/3 workbook, just pick ones you think she would enjoy. Then next year I would get the Level 4/5 workbook. That would be a nice progression.

Netpea already gave great advice, so I'll just agree! 5 days is the quickest I'd have her read through a book though. The Charlotte Mason philosophy is to savor books, to sit with them a while to let plot and character development happen. Though our ds at 9 yo can read extremely well, we still slow things down for DITHOR. We have for our almost teen too, and DITHOR is one of his favorite parts of the day. You can use the Level 3 books this year too - they are longer than the Level 2 books. HTH!
