This is the first time ever my 8 year old compared herself to any character of a book we have read. We are finishing up Amelia Earheart. On the cover shows a girl with a bow in her hair. My DD got bow for her hair and made that above comment. I didn't get it at first until she told me. She has the same color hair as the girl in the pictures but different color bow. Of course I took this moment to talk more about the book. While I have stopped using DITHOR for now, I have started using it for a guide to our oral talks. These seems to be working better than having her write. Guess I will wait a bit longer before having her write more, she seems to do better with oral work.

Also not to leave out my other two, they are now noticing letters in the stories that I read. At first it was cute but now it does get a bit Grr because I want to read to all of them but they just want to pick out letters that they know. I took HOP idea and made my own poster of letters and numbers. When they learn it, we mark it off. While the program didn't work for us, this poster idea has.

Perhaps flying is also in you dd's future? No, that's too scary of a thought, isn't it? Whenever a connection is made like this to a book, and whatever the connection is, that book is that much more memorable. I also love the questions in DITHR, and we've had some good discussions using them. I was just remembering that when we first began DITHR, my ds's writing wasn't quite up to where his reading was. So, first I wrote his answers in his workbook as he said them. Then later, I wrote half of his answers in his workbook and the other half on a markerboard - he had to copy the half on the markerboard in the workbook. Then later, I wrote all the answers on markerboard, and he had to copy them all in his workbook. Last, he just wrote them in his workbook. For him, it was as much an issue of not wanting to spell things incorrectly, as it was for him to have the fine motor skills to write. That's what worked for us - just thought I'd share! Now, I was thinking that if your daughter does not only look like Amelia Earhart, but also becomes a pilot, perhaps she could fly all of us to the Creation Museum? Just a thought...!

That is such a cute story! I can just picture your daughter now (as I am picturing Amelia on the cover)! I love it when kiddos start making connections and comparisons with what they're reading. It's as if a whole new world opens up to them. They definitely are heading into a new "level" of reading then.
