ER readers-supplemental title

I was assuming that the supplemental title, given above the weekly readings in the Emerging Reader schedule, would be on the same level as the scheduled book. It seems like they are much more advanced. Is that true? How were those titles chosen? Is it for children above the level written in the guides?

Gwenny,
The supplemental titles each week are paired to go along with a similar reading level. The reading level is listed after the book title. For example, a 3.7 reading level means third grade, seventh month.
You will find, however that the supplemental titles do have a less-controlled vocabulary overall. This can make the reading of those books more difficult, which is why they are supplemental.
They are meant to stretch the child in reading from a book with a less-controlled vocabulary. You could alternate the reading of the book by sentences, having your child read a sentence and then you read the next sentence to aid in the reading. Then, after the child has read it, you could read the whole thing aloud for enjoyment.
Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks Carrie. That's a great idea. My plan was to read the assigned Bible readings for the week and then do the supplemental title to break things up a bit, but the book "Clara and the Bookwagon" has definitely been too difficult for him. I think I'll try your idea.

I have been using the supplemental titles during school hours and the Beginner's Bible at bedtime. My ds is 6 and we have been reading 1 page each which seems to work nicely. I try and have him do the shorter paged and I will do ones that are longer. The books reallyseem to be good for him as far as learning more words and trying to sound out tougher words.

I like that idea also! I'm too impatient with the one page thing, I like to COMPLETE! I will slow down though. He's my first one that has been slower at reading.
