I have a 10 year old working in Bigger without extensions. This is due to his ability to comprehend what he is reading. I would really love to have him start working more independently seeing I'm teaching my 6 year old out of beyond also. Any suggestions on how to get him to work independently? He does handwriting copywork math and free reading by himself. If I allow him to do history or science alone I'm worried he either wont read it or comprehend what he read.

Maybe start where he's just reading on the days where it's only narration, no experiments/projects/notebooking. Then you can figure out how much he's retaining based on his narrations.
When my DD1 was in Bigger I would do the reading to her, but she'd do anything else involved independently. So basically opposite of what I told you first

Basically, anything involving writing she did by herself after I explained it to her.

My kids do the following independent work:
Study Bible verse (read it 3 times)
Study poem (read it 3 times)
Copywork or handwriting
Math drills (on my iPod) or other math review
Phonics (explode the code)
Bible devotion
Silent reading (choice or DITHOR reading)
