How do you present poetry copywork to your Beyond kids?

Post by abrightmom » Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:24 pm

DS8 can easily copy from the poem in the guide. DD6 may need to start with a line of poetry followed by a line to copy on using handwriting lines. I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to make this work. Perhaps I should just copy the poems and enlarge them for her, highlighting the lines with different colors.

Any ideas? I do want my kiddos to be able to do the drawings with their copywork and file them in a 3-ring binder.

I photocopy it, because my DD likes to know which lines she's done, and when I had her copying out of the book she would mark the lines in the book. Copying and enlarging for your younger would be a great idea, because that does make it easier for them to copy it correctly.

My 8 year-old copies from a photocopy of the poem. For my six-year-old, I hand write only as much of the poem as I expect she will easily copy that day. I use lined handwriting paper, and I skip every other line for her to copy underneath. It only takes a second! Sometimes she doesn't complete the whole poem by the end of the week, but if she has completed all the copying that was presented to her she feels good about her work.

I photocopy each poem and have him do his copywork on looseleaf notebook paper. We also follow the poetry guidelines in Beyond, which includes cutting out the poem like a puzzle, putting it back together, then he glues it to another piece of paper and illustrates the poem. HTH!!! :D

Alright ladies, there are some good ideas here. Thanks for the inspiration. I am narrowing it down. We have a late start to our school year so I have a week to wrap up all the prep. :D

Hi Katrina, (waving)
We are having a late start as well. I still haven't ordered two HOD programs but hopefully next week I can. I do hope to start Bigger and finish Little Hearts though, since I already have them :D

My ds 6 has TERRIBLE handwriting (or at least I think it is compared to my perfectionists dd8! :D )! I copy each line of the poem in a wide ruled notebook and he writes it underneath mine. If there is a particular letter he is having trouble with, I will write those in a highlighter on a separate line after the poem and he traces over them. He is working on a's and s's right now since they seem to give him the most trouble. I just let him do copywork for about 5 minutes and then he stops wherever he is and picks up again the next day. At the beginning of the unit, I fill up a page with as many lines of the poem as I can and then make more pages if needed throughout the week.

Hi Linda,

:D I bet you are going crazy with the waiting. We lost our dear Poppy a few weeks ago (my hubby's Dad) and it's just been a whirlwind summer watching his rapid decline (cancer). Ugh. We had a HUGE family reunion and a variety of other unexpected schedule changes. Now we are home and trying to catch up while grieving, caring for Mom, and all that.....I am excited to use HOD with my kids this year and we aren't going to back pedal or jump ship like we did last year. I learned my lesson and anticipate a year of fun, growth, and learning for all of us.

When we did Beyond, it was with my ds8 and dd6. My son could do the copywork pretty quickly, and my daughter struggled more with it, as she was new to writing and copywork. So I decided how much my son should do each day, (like 2-4 lines depending on length) and my daughter would also work on as much as she could accomplish in the amount of time it took my son to do his, even if it was just a line or half a line. This way they were both working on copywork at the same time, doing what they were capable of at their level. I required quality work, so even though my daughter did less, it was a great skill building year for her, as she grew leaps and bounds in this area! :D :D

Oh, I think I printed out some bigger handwriting paper for her, too, so she had a nice size guide for her letters.

Blessings on your school year!

Katrina, I'm sorry to hear about your FIL. I'll keep you all in my prayers, especially for your mom.

Yes, I am going crazy. I keep putting things in my cart and I visit HOD's website daily. We don't want to use a credit card, so this is why it's taking FORever to get my order in. I keep saying hopefully next week but this time I do think it will be in the next week or so.

Blessings,
