This "homeschooled kids" just don't know : )

It is funny now that I am teaching 65 homeschooled children in a HS Co-op one day a week, I realize the things that NONE of us usually teach our kids!!
Well, I am sure *some* of us do, but here is what I have noticed that homeschooled kids (mine included) struggle with knowing...
Their Address
Their Phone Number
Their Birthday
Their Middle Name
The Pledge
The Star Spangled Banner
Isn't that funny?? Who can add some??

analog clock time telling!
(Ps kids know this really well because they are constantly watching it all day long!)

I have thought of this at "odd" times often ... things like the address and phone number ... but I never think of them during our school day to go over with them
.

I teach my children all of those things.
The reason in part is because I was a "homeschool kid" myself and we found it necessary to know. ( it was mainly in the '80's. And everyone was nosy & frowning on us, so my mom was tough!)
I'm sure there are other things my children should know that I don't think to teach them.
Maybe I'll realize it before they graduate.

That cannot be a stereotype of most homeschoolers-especially HODers. I have, in my Beyond portfolio, papers where my dd wrote her name(not the middle, but she knows it), address, and birthdate for grammar. I don't have the guide anymore, but I'm assuming that was something Carrie had included in there?

This is my first year using Beyond ... my older boys did not start HOD until Preparing. Why am I not surprised HOD has this covered ?

Mine says, "homeschool grade!". We haven't started HOD yet, we start Tues., so maybe that will change when we do.

My oldest still struggles with his birthday and analog clocks - I actually think there's something deeper going on there though..a time & space issue? dunno...
We just started using their "grades" because everyone kept asking so I finally just said, "third and first" with a big, polite smile.
hmmm....one thing I've thought about before but have never managed to put into action is emergency planning ie. calling 911, what to do in case of fire, if someone's badly hurt or sick, etc..... Note to self: do this!

Since our children are with us nearly 24/7 we don't always think about talking to them about "Stranger Danger", too. And behavior our children need to recognize as "wrong" with people who are not strangers as well.
Something we don't like to think of but need to address.

Thanks Suzy! That's something we need to address as well.

I always remember when my girls were young what one of their Sunday School teachers said to me. She said your girls love to answer questions and they are not shy, but it would be nice if they would raise their hands. I never thought of teaching this to them.
My children just expected to try and answer the question when it was asked. I went home and the next day taught them to raise their hand and not just give the answers. LOL

We teach all those on your list, but I'm sure there are others we have missed.

This just came up for us a few weeks ago. Someone was speaking to our 8 y/o about good touch/bad touch. He was completely clueless.
