Bigger Half Speed - advice?

Hello,
My son will be in 2nd grade this year and we will be doing Bigger. I'm considering using the guide at "half speed." I've read a few previous posts on the board of mom's going half speed with a guide, but I'm still a bit unsure of how that's done. I want my son to be fully ready for the independent work, written narrations and studied dictation in Preparing so I really feel that maybe going half speed with Bigger would be wise.
I think I've seen where Julie has done this exact thing with Bigger. Has anyone else? And if so, how exactly did you execute this on a daily basis?
I've read where some mom's do the left side of the guide one day and the right side of the guide the next day. I'd still like my son to do daily copy work, the spelling lists (and start the Bigger studied dictation next year as we finish up the guide), and cursive.
I guess my question is more with the R&S grammar, history and science. How do slow that down and stay on track...
Thanks for your help!
