Another Dictation Question from a Newbie at Dictation :)

My daughter is almost 7 and just started Bigger. We're going half-speed. We've been doing dictation twice weekly since she successfully completed the spelling lists last year without any trouble. My question is that it is taking her about 3 tries to get through a dictation passage with typically only 1 mistake the first two times. Is this appropriate at her age level? If not, should I just go back and redo the spelling lists?
Thanks!
Melissa

I have seen this in my dc at all levels. If your dd was missing several things over and over I would question the placement, but I think she sounds like she is doing fine. I think repetition is what has been so helpful to my ds. I am no pro, but if it were me I would keep going as you have been.
Hope to encourage you. Maybe someone else can share there experiences!

Perhaps you can try Julie's method of studying the dictation passage? We are doing this here and it helps:

Thank you both very much! You ladies were both helpful.
Now that I'm starting the "older guides" with my kids I feel like I'm in unknown territory! I felt so confident with the first three starting out, but doing school the Charlotte Mason way now is introducing me to some new concepts and ways of teaching. I think they are wonderful as much of it is how I was actually taught in public school as a child by God-sent Christian teachers. School just isn't like this anymore
So blessed to be able to create this same style and level of learning for my own children...and equally as thankful for this board so full of wisdom and advice for when I get stuck!

One other thing that may help is to go to doing dictation daily. The repetition is helpful for dc remembering their errors and fixing them. We have gone half-speed too, so you'll know if daily dictation is too much or not. Dictation only takes 5 minutes, so it's more a matter of whether you think it would help to go to doing it daily, or whether it would be better to ease into it half-speed. HTH!
In Christ,
Julie
