Where to place my son?

Hey there,

I am brand new to homeschooling. I've been reading so much information about different curriculums, and so far Heart of Dakota is my favorite. My son is 7 years old, and we just adopted him from the foster care system. He had to be in public school while he was a foster child, an NC requirement. So he's completed kindergarten and first grade in public school. In first grade he was above grade level in reading and most subjects, but average in math. We've decided we want to home school because we want to give our son a strong Christian foundation, and also because he has severe ADHD. I really feel like our son will thrive at home since I won't require him to sit still all day. He would get in so much trouble at school because of not sitting still and not controlling his impulses.

I am very excited to homeschool. I know it's going to be a challenge, but I can't think of a better one. Now I'm trying to figure out which HOD curriculum to use. I keep leaning toward Beyond Little Hearts For His Glory. I'm also looking at getting the Basic Package along with the math Package 1A & 1B. I just want to make sure this is a good level for my son. I don't want it to be too easy for him because he is so smart, but I worry that Bigger Hearts for His Glory may be too much. Any one want to offer some advice? Also, which math would you recommend for a child who has completed 1st grade in the public school system, 1a & 1b or 2a & 2b? Thanks so much in advance.

Welcome to HOD! You have chosen a great curriculum for your son. Our 9yo daughter was adopted through the PA foster system 6 years ago. We have enjoyed using Little Hearts for 1st grade and Beyond for 2nd. We are beginning Bigger for 3rd. If you have looked at the placement chart and feel your son places in Beyond, that would be great for 2nd. Bigger is a transition in skill level, so Beyond would give him time to mature and adjust to homeschooling. There is more writing in Bigger, so I am only having my dd do 3 days a week, just a little more than half speed. I don't know what to tell you about math. Maybe someone can direct you to a placement test or something. Congratulations on your adoption. Have a wonderful year with HOD! :D

Welcome :) There is a placement test for Singapore Math which should be printed out, and your child should complete it with no assistance at all from you-you may read the instructions to him, but resist the urge to explain/teach anything he does not readily understand, as that will inflate his score. That being said, Singapore Math is an advanced math curriculum, usually about a year ahead of the stated level as compared to most American programs-in the country of Singapore, kids start level 1A at age 7, so if that is where he needs to start, your child is not behind :D Here is a link to the placement test, if you choose to use it:
