My Son's Reading

My son is finishing the emerging readers. He reads well. However, if I don't have him place his finger under the words he is reading, he simply gets lost. He also "reads" what he *thinks* the sentence should say often times instead of what is actually there. I will say things like, "Let's try slowing down and try that sentence again." But this interrupts the flow of the story.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I am no expert but I read where a lady made a book mark that had a "window" in it to where the word the child was reading was basically the only word viewable...Don't know if that would help or not but thought I would throw it out there

I recently purchased for my 14 yo a set of "window" bookmarks call see-n-read. They have a clear window that shows one line at a time, while the rest of the bookmark is gray-you can see the rest of the text, but the line you are on is "highlighted" by the clear window. Having said that, if your son is at the emerging readers level, I don't see anything wrong with allowing him to keep his place with his finger for now.

My dd does the exact same thing. She has problems with eye tracking. The technical term is convergence-when the eyes don't team together. You may want to get his eyes tested for that. Even if his vision is good, it could be a problem. Sometimes vision therapy is recommended. That involves special exercises for the eyes. There are others who have talked about that problem on here. My dd frustrates after reading a while, because she loses her place or because she doesn't say the right word. So we don't always get the normal amount of reading done each day. She had eye problems at birth, so her situation is more complex. We haven't gotten through the ER's yet. Hopefully, we'll finish those by the end of this coming school year. She is going to need a pointer or ruler for a long time. That's okay. I'm just happy she's reading.

My ds uses the see n read also and it is a big help to keep him from losing his place.
