Writing in Beyond?

I have ordered Beyond for my 6yr old son. I know there is copy work included in the guide, but is there writing activities? Or is this something I will need to add? Thank you for any advice!

Hi Jenny,
I'm not very experienced myself but I'll chime in anyway.
Has your son already completed a writing program like A Reason for Writting or Handwritting Without Tears? If he has than I would think that the Copywork would be plenty for a 6yo. If not then I would start with one of those or something like it before diving into the Copywork itself.

Yes, he has handwriting completed. I was thinking about creative writing. Is this included in the program? Thanks!

There is not any creative writing included. My daughter likes to write so I gave her a journal topic on lighter days which she really enjoyed. It would be a sentence started and then I had her write 2-3 sentences. It wasn't much, but it made her happy

Jenny, these old posts from Carrie should help:

Also, there is a sticky thread at the top of the forum with links like these explaining why certain things are or are not in certain guides (I think it's called "The reasons behind HoD's choices") which might have more helpful information - I just shared a couple of links that specifically mentioned creative writing.
Hope that helps!

Thank you! This does clear it up and helps me understand the reasoning behind the choices.

Hi Jenny! The ladies have done a great job of answering so well already.

We really enjoyed Beyond Little Hearts. There are many LA skills that are introduced for dc to work on throughout the year. Grammar introduction to various skills, as well as excellent guidance in oral narration come to mind when I reminisce about doing Beyond.

As far as the writing goes, there is copywork daily from the poetry (and some poems are quite lengthy), there is a gentle once a week introduction to grammar that sometimes requires writing, and there is writing daily for very short spelling lessons. We did "A Reason for Handwriting A" along with this, as our sons needed to cement their printing skills.

Other than that, we added nothing to Beyond, and we found it was a great fit for 1st grade! HTH - you'll have to share your year with us here on the board!
In Christ,
Julie
