First time using HOD - would anyone like to answer a few ?'s

First off, I apologize, I'm SURE these are things that have been asked 500 times! I did browse the board and the FAQ's, but also trying to make good use of naptime
so thought it might be quicker to ask here!
I'm just looking for some input to help decide what to order. I'm looking at Bigger hearts, and trying to decide what packages we do/don't need. Our son is 7 (turns 8 in September) and will be doing second grade. Last year we used Oak Meadow curriculum, which we liked fine, I just liked HOD's layout for myself better, and I like that it seems to still be 'relaxed' and gives us some flexibility as far as following his pace. I would consider him an emergent reader?
I'm a bit puzzled on math. The 2A/2B set mentions Beyond LH, but if we didn't use it last year, is he going to be overwhelmed? (We're working on adding/subtracting double digits, and basic concepts of multiplication and division.) Does Bigger hearts cover math in the curriculum itself? Or do these workbooks tie in directly? ..I hope I'm wording that right!
I'm sure I'll think of a couple other questions
But the 5 month old is calling
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
