First time using HOD - would anyone like to answer a few ?'s

First off, I apologize, I'm SURE these are things that have been asked 500 times! I did browse the board and the FAQ's, but also trying to make good use of naptime ;) so thought it might be quicker to ask here!

I'm just looking for some input to help decide what to order. I'm looking at Bigger hearts, and trying to decide what packages we do/don't need. Our son is 7 (turns 8 in September) and will be doing second grade. Last year we used Oak Meadow curriculum, which we liked fine, I just liked HOD's layout for myself better, and I like that it seems to still be 'relaxed' and gives us some flexibility as far as following his pace. I would consider him an emergent reader?

I'm a bit puzzled on math. The 2A/2B set mentions Beyond LH, but if we didn't use it last year, is he going to be overwhelmed? (We're working on adding/subtracting double digits, and basic concepts of multiplication and division.) Does Bigger hearts cover math in the curriculum itself? Or do these workbooks tie in directly? ..I hope I'm wording that right! ;)

I'm sure I'll think of a couple other questions ;) But the 5 month old is calling  Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Welcome! The ladies are so gracious about helping that I know you'll get your questions answered. :D I'll move your post over to the Main Board where more moms will get a chance to see it. All new posts begin on the Main Board. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Welcome-the best place to start is the placement chart: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php See where your child places on this chart, especially in the areas of reading, writing, and math, to help you pick the right HOD guide for him. Next, you can print out and have him independently do a Singapore Math placement test to be sure you pick the right level of math. HOD includes hands on activities/lessons for Earlybird K 2A/2B in Little Hearts (although this is changing soon due to this level of Singapore going out of print), Primary 1A/1B in Beyond, and Primary 2A/2B in Bigger. You do need the workbooks to go with these lessons. Here is a link to the Singapore placement page: http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_Test_s/86.htm
