We are in our summer break right now but I had to share an exciting result from using HOD!! In the middle of May, my dd, who was using Preparing, was doing the research section using Wikpeida. On this particular day she was on her own with this box, as I was helping one of my other dc. When I turned around I caught my dd using the dictionary to look up a word she did not know on Wikpeida!!! My dd hates the dictionary but here she was using it without me telling her to. HOD promotes self-learning, and we are bearing fruit in our home!!! Thank you Carrie!!!

That is great!
I looooved my dictionary when I was young. Around 13, 14 years old I started to write fiction stories a lot. Westerns usually, or horse stories. I really enjoyed looking up words or using "new" words for my stories... (rather than "cold", frigid, numbing, icey, bitter...) well, I thought it made my stories better. Haha.
I still love dictionaries, vines and strongs concordances. LoL.

That is exactly the kind of carryover HOD encourages!

Worksheets could never achieve that kind of carryover. I am so thankful for Carrie writing HOD in such a way that it naturally carries over into life. That is what we want! Thanks for sharing!

Julie

Julie,
I was so excited when I saw here do that, I almost squealed!

You are right when you say that worksheets could never accomplish that. Too much of public school is having the kids following steps 1-10 on a worksheet but never really letting them discover or desire to do that on their own. They need to have someone tell them to do such and such. Ahhhh...I just really appreciate Carrie and the work she has done!!!!!!

Sara,
That IS exciting, because it means she sees the dictionary as a tool to help her rather than just a "school assignment" that has no use!
Blessings,
Carrie
