Disliked homeschool year then switched to HOD & loved it???
Has anyone had a child that ended up dreading school but then you switched to HOD and they loved it? We did a program this past year that was okay for us. Some part sof the year were better than others, but it has been a struggle to finish the year with him. And he says school is boring now. The school struggle and calling it "boring" has been building the last couple of months. We are switching to HOD this coming year - Beyond. I am so hoping that after a summer break and then starting HOD that my son will love school again and love to learn!
Last year I went back and forth from the HOD table to this other programs table trying to decide what to use. I don't fully regret our choice...but I do somewhat wish that we had chosen HOD LHFHG instead for this past year!

Welcome to HOD. Don't beat yourself up because you didn't use HOD last year. We all can look back and say we wished we would have done something different. You will love Beyond and you have many years ahead to enjoy HOD.

Several things. Last year (after Carrie's advice), I didn't allow that speak at all. We started the year with the rules, some Biblical verses on homeschooling, etc. That worked WONDERFULLY! Also, obviously not everything can be fun. Most kids will say all school is boring and your child is no different. At the end of the year, I have dd fill out a sheet that asks questions like favorite book, least favorite book, favorite subject, what you learned the most, what you'd like to see next year, etc. It's sort of funny to read, if you give them a day or so to complete it and they don't fill it out as you stand there. There's nothing wrong with finding out what they didn't like. I've been known to agree on ocassion and have them give me examples of what they would do to fix it, (within reason). Giving them some input, makes them feel good and gives them a bit of control about their school days. Let it be known that it's usually not a wide open question, but could be a question to choose "this or that". Find out EXACTLY what it is he didn't like. A particular book, a particular activity? What more activities, etc.? No blanket answer allowed. They need to pinpoint it and see how we can fix it.intotheirhearts wrote:Has anyone had a child that ended up dreading school but then you switched to HOD and they loved it? DD liked HOD better than anything else. She loves to read and she used to HATE it. So yes, it's possible to switch and have them like it. We dreaded the textbook approach, but it depends on the child.

Did Carrie respond in this forum with the link? If so, you should be able to find that message by clicking "Control Panel" and then "Show Your Posts". If you remember roughly the month and year that you asked, you will be able to scroll and fine it.
Just a thought.

It wasn't in a question I asked and I didn't respond.
It was previous to me starting last August 2011, and I think it had to do with kids that disliked school.
I may have it in my hard copy, but I have company...but I can still look. It just may take me a day or so to find it.

That was great information! Definitely will help as the new school year rolls around. I do interrupt our reading sometimes to add in information or to explain a word. And sometimes I will add to lessons. But hm....I will try the cut and dry just do it as the manual says approach. I will be re-reading that info right before we start up school again! Thanks so much for finding it!!
