Questions for Singapore users

We began our delayed child age 8.5 with Beyond in late Jan. We began with singapore 1 a.. and have just finished with it(.Prior to this math we had only been working with dominoes, discussing numbers and how many place settings at the dinner table etc. playing bean bag catch and taking turns calling out numbers 1-20.)
. I do have a lot of questions and would like some feedback. I had to direct my son every step of the way and I know modelling the concepts is kosher , which we did. I posted earlier about the very abstract lesson 49 and it seems others did what I did . I happened to watch a you tube video of some of the info about the singapore claim to fame and during the course of it they discussed the number bonds. I realised my child had never been exposed to number bonds. and saw that it was introduced in the early bird series. We encountered him seeing numbers going from higher to lower and you were to follow the pattern and he didn't recognise that but when I pointed it out to him that this number is 9 and the next is 8 ,what would the next be , he was ok. now I can see why that might of been more difficult for my son in 1 a.
So now my concern is if we should back pedal to the early bird series or continue on in 1 b. We have had a difficult math journey with another child in the past, and I would like to avoid that possibility.. especially if the problem is I really skipped a learning concept..
I will appreciate your insights.
thank you
