Written Narratrion Preparing

Post by mrsrandolph » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:02 am

I have 2 in Preparing. Daughter (9) can do a written narration fairly well and enjoys it. My son (8) has some mild learning issues and even oral narration requires some prompting from me. Additionally he has some fine motor issues that make handwriting hard anyway. When I explained in unit one that we would be doing written narration, daughter cheered and son cried.

So, my plan was to allow him to dictate his narration to me (with prompting questions) while I type his narration.

Is this too babyish?

Thoughts?

Can he type at all? If he can then you could either have him type it from scratch which is what I did with my ds who has dysgraphia and CP which causes fine motor issues, or he could orally narrate it to you and then type it from that. If he can't type it then you could let him dictate it to you at first and then work towards having him take it over. By the middle to 3/4ths of the way into the guide you would want him to be able to do it or else he won't be ready for CTC. The thing about you writing it for him is that you will capitalize correctly and spell everything correctly. This can cause issues down the road. My ds used to have someone scribe everything for him due to his fine motor issues and we are still struggling with the fact that he forgets to start each sentence with a capitol and put punctuation at the end of a sentence. It is because he didn't have to worry about it, whoever was writing it for him just did it. Is he going to be able to do all the other writing in Preparing? My ds ended up typing the dictation and the answers to the science questions as well, but he wrote all the copywork.

I think I will have to start out typing it for him, but he should be able to take it over eventually. I NEED to start them on a typing program SOON!!
