Choosing MTMM?
I am considering homeschooling my 13 year old daughter who has been in public school. I am looking at MTMM... Would all of the recommendedations work out for a student who hasn't been doing them all along, or should some changes be made?
Any advice or encouragement would be appreciated!

Welcome-have you checked the placement chart yet? Success with Heart of Dakota depends on proper placement, so after you have checked, please share and we will help you think it through 
Also, if you share some of her strengths and weaknesses, that would be a help. Also consider the fact that your child is coming into an entirely new way of "doing school" since she has been in public school, so some adjustment time is to be expected, perhaps even starting the guide slowly at first, whichever one she fits best into. If a child is properly placed, doing the guide as written provides a full and enjoyable school year!

Welcome to the HOD Board! 
I am excited for you to begin homeschooling your dd - I think you have come to a great place. HOD is helping me navigate all of that "growing up" our almost 13 yo ds is doing. I have been so thankful for HOD helping me through this. Age is one indicator of placement, but skills are even better. I too would love to hear your thoughts about your dd after you check out the first page especially of the placement chart that the pp linked. Then, we can give more accurate help, and get you and dd started off on the right track! I'll check back later to see if you've had a chance to share - HOD is a great way to go about homeschooling. I think you and your dd would enjoy it as much as our family has!

From the placement chart, I would say she places in MTMM. She is a struggling speller, and has a hard time staying focused and organized in public school, but I would say she is on grade level with everything.
I am mainly concerned with language arts, grammar, spelling, writing...is the recommended program going to be something we can just pick up and start using at this level, not having completed previous levels?
How about math? She needs visual and auditory help with working through problems (step-by-step examples) sometimes. I was looking at Teaching Textbooks.
And DITHOR? Should we do this so late in the game, or should we just grab a few Progeny Press guides.

I can't answer about everything, but just wanted to say that DITHOR would be a great literature program to start at any age. She sounds like she would be ready for level 6/7/8-if she is going to 8th grade, there is a grade 7/8 book pack available. If she will be a 9th grader, you can still use level 6/7/8 and substitute books that are grade-appropriate in each genre covered.

For spelling, there are many dictation levels in MTMM - I'd just start with the first one and see how dd does. For grammar, you may want to start with R & S English 5 if dd has not had much experience with grammar and with diagramming. You can just do a lesson a day. For math, have you looked at Video Text? I think you may enjoy that, as it has step-by-step solutions. Otherwise, you can certainly use TT too, as any math program will work with MTMM. HTH! In Christ,

I'm just popping in with a few musings in trying to wrap my mind around where your daughter is at skill-wise and grade-wise. Is she currently heading into grade 8 or grade 9? This will make quite a bit of difference in what we advise.
Next, in pondering what you've shared so far, I'm thinking that it may be possible that your daughter should start in a level lower than MTMM. The reason I'm thinking this is that if she struggles in spelling than this will certainly be affecting her written work, making the level of written work in MTMM a pretty hefty jump up. If she has struggles staying on task and staying organized, then the level of independence required in MTMM will be a big challenge. It is often wise in making the transition from school to home to make sure not to shoot so high skill and placement-wise that we over-challenge. This can really lead to frustration. I want to be sure to make the transition to home as smoothly as possible!
There is much independence and much gaining of skills to be found in the guides from CTC on up. So, these are definitely considerations which affect placement. If you get a chance, could you share a few titles of some books your daughter has ready for school or at home that she could do easily? Another help would be for us to know if your daughter is able to write 3-5 paragraphs pretty easily and if copywork is done easily too?
Then, we can help even better with placement.
