HOD and My Boys, We Kept with It!!!

Post by Homeschooling6 » Wed May 30, 2012 3:39 pm

Hi, Ladies, it's been a while since I've posted. It's just been super busy at our house but I wanted to share and hopefully encourage others using HOD.

As many of you know, in the middle of our school year I switched to HOD Preparing Hearts with Caleb and Brent, Beyond with Ethan and Little Hearts with Lance.

Well with my two middle boys the workload has been a struggle. They absolutely LOVED the history and Bible but the independent history and science and copywork they didn't like at all. In fact, I never understood it when people would say, "It's like pulling teeth to get my child to do........". Brent, would actually have tears and it would take all day to finish his work. Many days he wouldn't, then it was either never completed or his work load doubled the next day.
With the copywork Brent said cursive was too hard. He asked if he could do half in print and half his copywork in cursive. I reluctantly said, yes, he can do half & half.
Caleb, wasn't as bad but he didn't care for it either.

Now fast forward. We are almost done with Unit 22. But the past month or so, there's been a complete turn around. My boys are starting their Preparing work on their own now!!! They open the guide and start the independent work without me having to remind them. In fact Brent said he could do his copywork and Bible passages all in cursive!! I'm am just SUPER excited and praising the Lord.

There were times when I thought we weren't going to make it with HOD, but I had my children stick with it and am so glad I did. Another praise, Brent, is looking forward with using CtC next school year and was drooling, okay almost drooling over the catalog. He is excited that he'll have his own guide.

The whole time while using HOD and struggling with the boys, I have had my husband support and would pray to God about it. I knew in my heart that it would get better. I also felt that it would be a struggle this first year, I'm not sure how to explain it but it's like I was aware before we started HOD that this would be a hard time for us (regarding school). Even though there were times when I wondered if HOD was right for us, I knew that this struggling with my boys was temporary, like knowing the light at the end of the tunnel would shine through, if that makes sense.

Anyway, all that to say, if any of you are struggling and you just feel in your heart that this is where you need to be, then put one foot in front of the other and keep walking :D

Thank you Carrie, for all you do and Julie for your encouragement to us ladies. You two are a blessing!

That is so awesome to hear. I often think of you and your children. How amazing is God to have been the rock to keep you all going with HOD.
