Need advice. Should I..........

add easy phonics readers to TRL? I just finished Lesson 3 with my 6 yr old. He is doing really well and I am so proud of him. However he seems to need more practice. He is motivated to do 4 to 5 pages a day. But I don't want him to move to fast. Hummm........I didn't teach my first child to read. She was in half day K at the Christian School. I remember her bringing home little readers, very simple ones. Similar to Bob books. Is this necessary and how do I really tell how he is doing? For my DD reading came pretty easy at first. I have notice DS really has to focus on each letter and sound until he remembers it. Like the word dog. He knows the word dog but the word met I had to remind him to say the sounds even though he just had read the word get. I just want to help him the best I can and I know learning to read will be harder for him than it was for his sister. He had some hearing setbacks early on and has been in speech the past 18 months. He has made huge improvements this past year! Yay! So knowing those things what should I do?

sorry I was just wondering if I should be having my six yr old read to me other than when we do The Reading Lesson.

Hi Samantha,
I will tell you what we did, and that may be helpful (or not...LOL).
I also have a daughter who learned to read at school, and it came very natural and quick for her. My son, who is now 8 (and is doing GREAT with the emerging readers, by the way), did not seem to take to it so naturally. He also has had some trouble with speech, but it is much better now. We did TRL slowly with him. It probably took almost 2 years. I remember reading in the Introduction of TRL that most children will not do as well as you expect them to until about Lesson 7...but it was longer than that for my son. Anyway, we did not supplement with anything but just kept plugging along, and now he is turning into a great reader!
So, I think if both of you would enjoy adding little Bob Books it wouldn't hurt. But we found it was not necessary in learning to read. TRL worked great by itself.

Thank you for responding! I just was stumped since I remember my DD bringing home little readers LOL! I know this could be a struggle for him and I don't want to mess up. I also don't want to push either and him end up not enjoying reading. Good to know we are doing just fine! That is awesome your DS is in the emerging readers now!

On the Reading Lesson Website they have free printable stories to practice from like what is the the book itself - so that could be helpful...
