Child taking over history

I'll start this out by saying that I haven't looked at history in CTC at all ;)

I know the CM philosophy is that once a child is 9, if they can read their own history, they should. So going off of that. Which do you think would be a better transition into reading their own history (in Preparing unit 10 right now)

A - reading the history reading one day per unit and slowly expanding

B - reading a portion of the history reading each day and slowly expanding

I'm leaning toward the first option because it seems like it would be easier to transition over a certain amount of time. Plus it seems like Jayden will be more receptive to option A.

I was thinking that if I did option A then I could split up the remaining units and basically only have her reading the history half the time by the end of Preparing. So since we are in unit 10 it would be roughly 12 weeks of her reading one day per unit and then another 12 weeks of her reading 2 days per unit.

This is coming about because I feel like at this point she retains more when she is reading and narrating to me than when I read and she's narrating.

Good thoughts here! I would go with the option Jayden is more receptive to as well. Tell us how it goes! :D It is kind of exciting to be at this stage, isn't it? Dc retain so much more once they begin doing their own reading in these subject areas. It really makes the follow-up discussions and activities such enjoyable teachable moments. :D Enjoy!

Julie

Well today was supposed to be our first day of her reading.... and I forgot until we got to the point where I was doing the teacher work with her. I always go over her English and Math, DITHOR, and the I boxes and send her off to do those things and take that time to do school with everyone else. So it got to the time I was doing HIstory with her and I realized she was supposed to have read today. Oh well, next week!

What we (Jayden and me together) decided was for her to read the day where the only follow up to the reading is an oral narration (day 3). We thought that way she'd have the background from the first couple of readings for the week, but would also have me reading to her before the written narration. For the last bit I'll probably have her read either day 1 and 3 (to break it up) or day 2 and 3 (so I can start and finish her for the week). I told her we would cross that bridge when we come to it.

She seemed a little overwhelmed when I brought it up, but I do think she's looking forward to it.

Thanks so much for coming back to share an update on your thoughts as it helps us so much to have more information as we ponder through this important step with you. :D

In thinking over not wanting your daughter to be overwhelmed in this transition, I'm thinking it may be a good idea to have her read either only the first part or only the last part of each day's reading on her own. In this way, the routine will be the same every day, so it won't take any special remembering as to which day is the day to do her own reading. :D Also, it will be less overwhelming, as she will only be responsible for reading a small part of it each day at first. I would just assign her a certain amount of paragraphs. Plus, it will allow you to either start the reading or finish it, keeping you in the loop daily yet as she makes this transition. :D :D

Blessings,
Carrire

She gets overwhelmed about anything that's not concrete. Any discussion of future happenings overwhelms her. I am quite confident the actual reading will not be too much for her.

I see what you are saying about keeping me in the loop and being easier to remember ;) But transitions are another thing that really bother her  That's the main reason that I go over all her I/S work first thing, let her do all that, and THEN transition into the T boxes and just flow from one to the other without stopping for a break. So that is the reason we were looking at the one day a week. Because I could move that over to her I/S list for that day and it wouldn't cause a meltdown.

I guess I should say that she has OCD, so if something is not as it is written, then she really struggles with it. Very black/white in her thinking. So if I leave it on her T list and just have her read part of it, then that would be a cause of.... strife? dissension? angst?.... between us. And it would cause other issues throughout the day/week. But if you could figure out a way I could make it more of a structured "read this part, then I'll finish" or vice verse I'd be more than willing to try it that way!
