LHTH - trying to decide which Bible/devotional

I have decided to start LHTH with DS when we start back to school. :D I wasn't planning to do anything for "school" for him since he will just be 3, but he does better in our school day when he has some built in one on one time with mommy. I think this will be a great way to purposefully give him that (and be sure I do it!). Plus it will emphasize and cover the types of things I would have wanted to let him start exploring anyway.

I already have The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes and My ABC Bible Verses. I'm wondering if these would be OK for a newly turned 3 year old, or if I should really get one of the other Bibles or devotionals? I guess from looking at the packages, the Bible would be fine as it's part of the 3-4 package, but My ABC Bible Verses is in an older package. DS sits well for reading times - he can hold attention for regular picture/story books. I know that some of My ABC Bible Verses will be over his head, but we'd repeat it when he is 4 and possibly 5 as well.

I'm probably overthinking this, but would love any thoughts!

If you are thinking you will repeat LHTH when he is 4, I think I would order a different Bible and devotional because although he may not remember it, you certainly will, and the monotony for two years in a row may drive you crazy! :) I do think the My ABC Bible Verses is probably a little old for a 3 year old. My daughter (who is 5.5) absolutely loves that devotional, and she is getting so much out of it that I personally think I would save that one until he is 4. If money is an issue though, just go with what you have and make it work. You could even just skip the devotional for the 1st year of LHTH and then add My ABC Bible Verses for the 2nd year of LHTH.

Although, if he understands The New Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes, the younger Bible may be too simple for him. I don't have the younger version so I cannot speak to the complexity of that one. But, that is definitely something to consider because you don't want him to be bored with his Bible. And, The New Bible in Pictures does have a lot of stories, so maybe it actually wouldn't be so bad to repeat that one for a second year.

Our 3 yo ds absolutely loved "Big Thoughts for Little People"! I own "My ABC Bible Verses" as well, and he was able to listen to longer picture books easily at bedtime when we began LHTH, but "Big Thoughts..." was a BIG hit for him at 3 yo, and "My ABC..." was too difficult. He was able to make some real heart connections doing "Big Thoughts...". I'd really recommend using that instead with a 3 yo, and it is very reasonably priced at HOD. For the Bible, I think "The New Bible..." is a wonderful Bible, and would probably be just fine to use with your 3 yo as he sounds able to handle that. But, like the pp wisely mentioned, if you are planning on possibly doing LHTH again, I'd definitely save that one, and get "The Child's First Bible" for this time through LHTH. It is just plain fun to choose a different Bible and devotional a second time through LHTH - it makes it fresher for mama and child. :D HTH!

In Christ,
Julie

Thanks for the input! I think I will try to find a way to get Big Thoughts and A Child's First Bible. :)

I've used the New Bible in pictures when my daughters were 2 1/2-3 and will begin it again with my 3rd daughter who will be 3 in October when we start Little Hands this fall. It has been a perfect fit for them to begin reading comprehension because the questions are at just the right level. I loved seeing how they grew from the beginning of the Bible to the end with their understanding of what it said.

Has anyone tried the devotional "teach them to your children", how does it compare to "big thoughts"? I have a 2 year old girl who loves to be read to and has a biiiig vocabulary. She would be 2.5 when we start the guide.

We have both devotionals and the kids just loved Big Thoughts. I also recommend the New Bible in Pictures. :D

Personally, I think the ABC Bible verses will be a bit over his head. However, the Big thought for Little People is VERY easy to understand. FWIW. : )

Also, I think doing the Bible story twice is good for this age...
