Placement in Rod & Staff...

My 5th grader will be in Preparing next year and we are going to return to Rod & Staff. I'm not sure which level to place him in. I think he could benefit from going in the 4th grade level, but could do the 5th grade level if we felt it was best. His 3rd grade brother I have no problem putting him in at grade level, think it will be fine for him. What would you do??

What HOD guide will he be doing? That will make a difference in pacing.

Also, what has he done for grammar? Thanks!

He will be in Preparing.
2nd grade we did R&S 2
1/2 of 3rd grade we did R&S 3, other 1/2 we did Shurley Grammar 3
4th grade we did 1/2 the year at Classical Conversations doing Essentials in Language (where he did quite well), then he enrolled in private Christian school in January where they do Abeka 4 (which in my opinion is the WORST grammar program and he's definitely LOST some of his advancing grammar skills I think because of Abeka)
What do you think?

Thanks for answering my questions - that helps so much!

I think I'd do R & S English 4 with him then. It is somewhat of a foundational year, and will fill any gaps he may have from not retaining Abeka 4. R & S English is so advanced that levels 7 and 8 are often spread out over high school, so HOD has a general goal for students to complete R & S English 6 by the end of grade 8. This will totally be doable if your 5th grader does R & S English 4 in PHFHG. It is scheduled full-speed in PHFHG, so this will work out great!

The next year, R & S English 5 is scheduled half-speed in CTC, with the second half of it in RTR. In RevtoRev, R & S English 6 is scheduled full-speed, so with this plan, your ds would be on a great pacing path with R & S English!

HOD balances the R & S English workload with the overall LA workload in each guide, so it's very helpful to use the pacing planned in the guide when possible. HTH!
