Preparing ?

I really like how Preparing gives a world history overview before going into the history cycle. I have a question though about CHOW.

I owned this book, very briefly at one point, and read the first 5 chapters. Based on those chapters I returned the book.

So my two questions are the following:

1. Is there a single volume book, like CHOW, that covers creation to 1920 or so that is about the same size that could replace CHOW?

2. OR, was I too hasty, and the book of CHOW is much better than the first 5 chapters?

I value Carrie's choices, and I am curious if I was too hasty or if there is indeed a replacement.

Thank you!

I really don't see any way you could substitute a book for CHOW. The readings are tied in so nicely with Grandpa's Box and also with the other activities they are doing for that day or week. Since you don't do the first 3 chapters of CHOW you would skip most of what you didn't like. We really enjoyed CHOW here. I am picky and honestly found CHOW very neutral in the chapters we read. In any discussion of the belief that certain people had in false gods, Carrie is very careful to add things in the guide that always point the student to the bible and the one true God. It is a very engaging book and my ds remembers stories from that book to this day. It truly is just an overview and so it doesn't go in to deep detail which is the beauty of it. It allows the students to form hooks for further learning.

I am not there yet but I found this thread for you:

There was another thread recently about this too where I think Carrie commented on it. I will keep looking, but this thread does say the first 3 chapters aren't used so that may sway your decision some!

HTH,

UPDATE: Here's another post I found: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3133&hilit=Childs+H ... +the+World

I do not if this will help, but Carrie does not schedule CHOW until the 4th chapter (skipping the 1st three). We start with Grandpas Box, then pick up CHOW in the Bronze and Iron ages, skipping the evolutionist views. We have learned in our home that Carrie has taken GREAT care to make sure what is read to the kiddos (according to the exact schedule she provides in the Teacher Guides) and the way the curriculum flows are always from a Christ centered, creation/young earth view point!!! If there is ever anything that would point otherwise, she leaves a note to teacher to skip it, or to word it in another manner (this is usually the same with violent content). We noticed this ourselves with the history spine used in Bogger. Apparently there is some objectionable content in that book, but I never knew a thing about it until a question similar to yours was posted here. That is because we never read it, per Carries instructions (in which the questionable content was not included) :D :D ... I hope this is helpful. Something I would keep in mind also, is that I would not just hand the books that Carrie has scheduled for the teacher to read straight to the child to read alone! Some of them are perfectly fine, but others are not *(which is why Carrie has you read them or does not schedule the inappropriate content). She has taken great care to consider age appropriate material along with all the other guidelines that are in place for this beautiful curriculum. :D You may do a search here on the board, I know that Carrie posted awhile back about why this particular book was chosen? Her answer was very helpful to me! :D :D HTH
