Besides Wikipedia.com, what tangible resources are your favorites for CTC research? I know there's a rec to have encyclopeida or reference books or what have you in the introduction, but looking.for specific titles you can recommend for.my rising 6th grader. I want to do less internet/wiki research than we've done for PHfHG and teach her how to use real books and other internet resources as well.

I'm with you there! My son who is finishing up Preparing even has gotten used to doing his Bible verses from Bible Gateway and he uses our Encarta dictionary for his vocab. :( It's been quite a while since my dd has done CTC, but one book I like (though it doesn't have all the stories in it) is the Victor Journey through the Bible by V. Gilbert Beers.

I was wondering the same thing. We will be starting CTC in the Fall with our rising 6th grader. I'm considering purchasing the World Book Encyclopedia DVD (about $40) and also the International Children's Bible Dictionary. Anyone used those and found them helpful?

Ladies,

What are the research topics in CTC?

ETA: I just read this in the Introduction to CTC "Research questions are provided for students to answer on a topic inspired by the history study. Students use an index or a search engine to skim to find answers, and to formulate information from the answers they’ve gathered. One or more comprehensive history encyclopedias (in print form, in CD, or on the internet) is recommended for use with the lessons. A Bible dictionary or encyclopedia would also be helpful."

I think Kingfisher History Encyclopedia is awesome and World Book would be a great addition as well. Victor Journey Through the Bible is excellent. I'm all ears for more Bible dictionary or encyclopedia recommendations. We have a Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary and I've used that a lot. :)

Look on Ebay b/c the cd's for world book are CHEAP! I got the World Book Deluxe and the Brintanica Family Ency both so I could compare and contrast and pick one...and I paid $10 total with shipping. I found the International Children's Bible Dict, but found 2...which one are you speaking of?

The International Children's Bible Field Guide looks like a great choice for CTC's research as well...insight into the customs and more of the time.

Wow - great prices on the encyclopedias!! I'm definitely checking out ebay. Thanks for the tip!! As far as the International Children's Bible Dictionary, I didn't know there are two. I did see that it's available as an ebook or hard copy. The one I looked at on-line had F.F. Bruce as one of the authors and I think he's a very respected Biblical scholar. We have a Bible Dictionary for us adults in our home, but it gives too much information for my son and he has a hard time using it. I would really like a children's version he could use Independently. Anyone have a recommendation for children's Bible dictionary that you used successfully with CTC?

I got the encyclopedias on cd, then International Chidren's Bible Dictionary (F.F. Bruce is one of 3 authors), Baker Bible Handbook for Kids by Smith, Lucas, and Day, and then International Children's Bible Handbook: Genesis to Revelation by Larry Richards. I'm probably going to get the Victor's book later. I want to see inside these first! One of the CD's let's them gather info and make notes and keep it in one spot as they research to streamline...all on the cd. Thought that was pretty neat. :)

I'd provide links since it's to help with using HOD, and recommened to purchase for the CTC research box....but not sure that's allowed. So, hopefully this is enough info to find them if youre interested. :)

Oh...I spent less than $35 total with shipping to get all 3 books and both encyclopedia cd sets. Yay for ebay!

Awesome! I'm going shopping on ebay. Hope I can get as good a deal as you! Thanks for the suggestions on the children's Bible handbooks. Those both look great. Can't wait to start CTC in the Fall!!
